I think a huge part of the anger at the Last Jedi was not that we got a disillusioned old Luke, but that we never got Luke in his prime. It was another example of the sequels' "tell me, don't show me" approach to story-telling. I mean, Ahsoka is a disillusioned former Jedi, but we got to *see* it happen to her, not just be told about it.
One thing I loved about the appearance was that Luke's fighting style was very similar to his father's (there are videos comparing last night's scene to the Hallways scene or the massacre at Mustafa). Very similar to what they did with Ahsoka earlier in the season. That attention to detail is nice.
I liked this season a lot. And I think it illustrated the difference between good fan service and bad fan service. Good fan service is seeing stuff that reminds us that this takes place in a universe we know and are familiar with while still telling a new and original story. Bad fan service shoves things in our faces to say, "Hey, you like Greedo, right?! Here's Greedo!"
