I was sceptical aswell when people said they would run out, thinking i might run out myself but getting more usefull rewards in return.
Ran out a couple of times already, keep buying them in the shardshop whenever they're available and keep getting utter garbage raid rewards.
Seems to me if you're gearing a bunch of g12's and got enough spare crystals to buy the prototypes from shipments (great price) you're bound to run out eventually. You don't even have to be p2p for it to happen, i'm completely f2p for example.

Mk11 blasTech weapon mods are my fav, need a total of 32 for my entire roster (according to "gear needed" on swgoh.gg), got 36 and counting laying around collecting dust.
