The way I see it right now the only things that swgoh have going for it in regards to player retention are:
1. Star Wars brand
2. Awesome original game design, mechanics and artwork
3. Time/money sunk
If it wasn’t for those things, this game would have already been done
In fairness, the biggest knock against this game when it comes to player retention is that it's almost 4 years old. Mobile games, on the whole, have short lifespans (Yes, yes, yes--but for every Clash of Clans there are a dozen Greekopolises or whatever, games that lasted a couple months and collapsed). Even good ones don't last 4 years at the rate Galaxy of Heroes has.
The simple fact is that most players only play a game for a little while then move onto something else, that's normal and healthy. It's to the credit of CG and the massive appeal of the Star Wars franchise that this game has had the retention it has.
Guys like Mobilegamer or Ahnold or whoever all else have been making videos this entire time and are getting burnt out. But every month there are more new players that keep the game chugging along. It's only natural that long-time players die out and new players come to replace us.
Anyway, all of this is to say that ZAP is correct that those three things are fueling the retention GoH has. But it's also natural for people to simply stop playing a game and move onto something else after enough time. In my own opinion, your burnout rate is directly proportionate to your care factor. I play every day and do al the activities, I usually unlock stuff on the first go around and then finish on the second (Except for Darth Revan... Sigh... I was a zeta away. Oh well, next time.) but I consider myself a casual player because I'm not hardcore worried about where I finish in arena nor did I even start getting Traya shards until about a month ago.
Care less, enjoy more.
You’re absolutely correct about 99% of mobile games and player retention. This game had the golden goose though. People all over the globe have consumed with a passion anything Star Wars since 1977, 42 years.
There is also something else involved with the Star Wars brand that might be a factor. Star Wars toy sales have spiked every December since 1977, until 2018, when it actually stayed flat for the first time ever. I’m not sure why this is, many have ideas, in any case something is changing in the greater Star Wars brand and in this game as well.
