Mods with colors (gray, blue, purple, gold)
May I assume that a 1-star purple mod at Level 1 will have higher stats after upgraded all the way than that same 1-star gray mod at Level 1?

What I have seen is a secondary stat that is show, due to higher grade/color, will upgrade as @JohnGalt said however if you have more than one show initially one may upgrade multiple times.
I have seen white mods with no secondary stats have finally secondary stats that are higher than other higher grades.
Primary stats end the same regardless.
So from my experience so far main benefit in higher grade drops is seeing some of the secondary stats with out wasting coins.
