Okay, okay folks. I had some free time after Xmas, so I put that provoking idea into the forum to see what happens. I hope nobody seriously think I really like that idea of temporary mods (I mean just look up my mods).
Nevertheless, I think it is an obvious trend that the relevance of mods will continue to diminish in this game. CG will probably not be so bold changing them into temporary assets over night. But great mods as a permanent asset exclusively owned by long-term players are very contra-productive for the growth of this game. Good mods cannot be bought en mass, they can only be collected over a long period of time, making the game less attractive for new players. So, the global trend will always be to reduce "pure playtime-based advantages" (like mods, zetas, GL-tokens etc.) and introduce more "cash-based advantages", which can be acquired short-term.
DCs have been introduced as a way to add more variety to the stagnating PVP. True, to a certain extend it addressed that problem and made PVP more interesting or complicated dependent on the PoV. However, I believe the actual purpose was to make PVP more attractive for paying customers, who were not able to catch up in PVP despite huge spendings because of the mods advantage of older players. No wonder the best selling DCs are those with "TM gain", "bonus turns", which totally negates the meaning of speed rolls on mods.
Bottom line is, even though CG said they want to protect the investment of long-time players, in my opinion they only mean it in the context of long-time paying customers. For all others, the opposite is happening. The relevance of temporary assets will grow, just wait and see. I for myself already cut down on my mod energy refreshes. It's much better invested in conquest energy to acquire more DC materials.
