Musing to the Void
It seems that the majority of the comments/posts to the various SWGOH forums are overwhelmingly negative. Complaints far outweigh any positivity. At the behest of absolutely no one, I feel compelled to share my personal journey with SWGOH at large.
I downloaded the game in January of 2016, and played daily until just after the release of B1 - about a three-year run. I found myself frustrated at lagging behind the meta, given my lack of time to devote to the game. I left for about a year and a half.
I reconnected with a buddy in 2021 who had picked up the game in 2017, due in large part to my recommendation, and he was still chugging along. Figured I'd give it another shot. This would have been shortly before JMK was released. GLs were foreign to me, 6 dot mods had become the norm across the board, and I had a lot of ground to cover to achieve any sort of competitive level. Since that time, I've grown my account from 6M to 13M GP, I've taken on an officer role in my guild, and I've helped guildmates grow their accounts via advice (and occasional gifts here and there). This is where I derive my joy.
This game has seen and will most certainly see a ton of changes. Some have been great; others, less so. When the new Era of Anniversary was announced, I decided to spend a bit of money to 6* all new characters, and I continued that spending through the Era of Andor. Halfway through Andor, I was about ready to call it quits again, to the point that I actually had a chat with my guild leader and another officer about my potential departure.
As I sat one evening, contemplating deleting SWGOH for the second time, I arrived at the conclusion that I don't NEED to spend money on content I don't care about. Half of the anniversary characters and most of the Andor characters are of little to no interest to me. New Republic, similar deal. I resolved to purchase a shard packs to allow me to 5* the new characters, and leave it at that. The peace of mind gained by that simple change has allowed me to pull a 180 regarding my general sentiment toward the game.
SWGOH is not without its problems, and it feels like the dev team is hanging on by a thread sometimes. That being said, overall, I feel my time/money in the game has been well-spent.
All of this to say, if this game is legitimately ruining your day or you are actively having a bad time and dreading logging in to complete your daily activities - take a break. A week, a month, a year and a half. If you find yourself yearning to return, do so, but with the understanding that you are further behind than when you left. Temper your expectations. If you don't find a hole in your life after your uninstall, then congratulations! You've found fulfillment elsewhere. If you can't find it in yourself to step away entirely, at least take a step back. One hour of introspection now may yield countless hours of enjoyment as the game continues to evolve. If you're feeling pressure to login simply due to a perceived sunk cost, I've been there too.
If you've found anything I've said to resonate with you in a positive way, drop a comment. If you hate all of this and think I'm out of touch, prove my first sentence right with some snarky response.
Above all else, MTFBWY
