All I'm saying is that in general, catching up the f2p used to be roughly 6-8 months worth of time up until GAS came into the game.
I'm not sure what this means. If you mean that you could start a new account and be playing end-game content in 6-8 months without spending, no. That was not true a month before GAS came out.
If you mean that well-developed FtP accounts like mine would be 6-8 months behind the whales? Well, sure, that was probably true (except not my account b/c I wasn't quite as caught up then as I am now).
But I don't really think that my account is more than 6-8 months behind the whales right now in terms of access to end-game content. I'm about to pick up Jabba, and he hasn't even been out 3 months. Sure, I'm 6 months behind on Grand Inquisitor, but only because they didn't run his event for 6 months. IIRC I was ~4 weeks late on is first event and could have picked up GI at any time after that.
In general, I'm 3-4 months behind the whales in collecting things, although it's very likely I don't relic them as high as the whales do after collecting them.
In the past that hasn't mattered for content access, so before this TB hit I would say that I was -- Grand inquisitor excepted -- 3-4 months behind the whales in a general sense. All those r7 Ugnaughts didn't bother me because they added to whale GP without allowing the whales to do anything that I couldn't.
Now this TB does change the calculation a bit, sure. But the truth is that my guild isn't hitting the r9 territories, so the lack of r9 squads isn't holding me back from playing anything. Lack of r8 squads is, but that's an easier hole to fill.
So I'll do what I have always done. I'll farm the new stuff and use the time between relic'ing the new shiny toys to bring lower-priority toons to low relic and add some high relic levels on the high priority toons of previous quests. I generally have left my GLs anywhere between r5 and r7 depending on what I wanted a squad to do. If I could do what I wanted at r5, why spend the resources to take the GL to r7? I did not focus on just maximizing power. It is, as you point out, inefficient.
But eventually you get that special Datacron or something and your idea of the relic tier you want on that older but still special toon changes. So you slather a couple relic tiers on top.
This doesn't change any of that strategy, but it does mean that for a bunch of toons that are currently r5, I kinda want to slather r8 on all of them all at once.
Will I be able to do THAT in 3-4 months? LOL, nope. But still, I'll be just fine, and the fact that the whales are suddenly farther ahead of me than a mere 3-4 months **on this specific goal of playing the most ridiculous TB content** won't bother me at all.
One major reason why?
Because its' not our current toons that are going to make the difference in these TB missions.
Remember when LS Geo came out we didn't have JKL, JML, or JMK. We didn't have **any** Omicrons, much less special Omicrons that were tailored to defeat specific difficult missions. Now we have Bad Batch with Omega's Omicron specially tailored to trivialize the KAM mission. But the whales didn't get that a year before me. They didn't even get it a month before me.
Trust me, in terms of conquering this TB I'm not actually suddenly much farther behind the whales. Sure, the new requirements make me wish all my r5s were r8, but that won't be the secret to trashing these battles.
The secret to trashing these battles is waiting for the new toons that have kits specially designed to trash these battles, and the whales are going to have to wait just as long as I will.
