Sorry, but this is the silliest thing. If I can hit you from the 5 spot, I will. Maybe I can beat your team, but not the team in 2, 3, or 4. That makes you the target. I apologize if you don't like it, but this is the way it is.
I know a guy that feels the 1 spot is his. You can try to take it, but if you do and he sees you, he will take it right back. You know what? That's ok. It's the spirit of competition. Nobody owes you anything.
