Lockouts are definitely a strategy, but I can't imagine that the devs planned on a group of people colluding for 1st place in an aspect of the game that is designed very specifically not to be group focused...
If the idea of the arena is to do your personal best each day against a single opponent at a time, then there is an inherent problem with a group of people deciding not to let you do so.
Unfortunately, I have no solution for this at present. I'll think about it and see if I can come up with a possible solution so I'm not just another person whining, lol.
