Honestly, that's all I'm seeing. Too much whining. And that's coming from me, someone who won't likely even be able to (without spending a bit, anyway) even get R2 to 7* this time around. I might, but...

It's not good for the game if only the whales get a particular powerful character. Nor is it good if every player gets that same character. In a game like this, healthy competition is the key to long-term success. Almost everyone should have people just below and just above them in power, to simultaneously and effectively spur them to better their squads.
The way CG engenders this stratification is by dropping hints early and then formally announcing things last-minute. The people with their ears to the ground will hear the hints and plan accordingly, giving them a leg up on those who can't be bothered.
People just need to decide which group they want to be a part of. I would hope that most of the people who actively post in these forums would want to be in the group of planners.
