Tourney: constructive criticism

Hello all,

I wrote the same post on the forum but it was close because it started to speak about cheaters. I would like to give my review this time and hope it can create a positive room for feedback to CG and Capgasp. I wrote my expectations, what I did appreciate, things I quite disliked and how to solve them. I play since February last year, have 30 G10+ toons, have some cool mods (268 speed QGJ and 259 speed Biggs), rank top 3 in arena most of the days and my guild complete heroic AAT in less than 12 hours.

My expectation for the tourney are the following: It should be a fair competition between players where the outcome should depend on strategy of entrance in the tourney, roster and ally points. Moreover, I expect everyone to enjoy them and have fun talking about them and be happy just to participate in them.

A few points I really appreciate about tourney: - It is the only time in the game where I can use my whole roster. I have actually 7 viable arena teams (each toon having more than 40 additional speed) and it is pleasure to play with them and rediscover my old meta teams.

Rewards are not bad per se. We always welcome free gear (especially stun guns and cuffs);

Competiton is split by timezone;

It requires ally points, giving long time players the chance to compete against he whales;

Tourneys let us discover other OP defense teams;

They last only 24 without roster refresh;

There is a calendar to manage my AP and efforts in each tourney.

What I dislike and how to correct it:

Tourney server allocation should be transparent. I know there is a deadline from which no new server is created, this should be public.

Rewards should be less concentrated to the top and less variable among servers. This is easily corrected by increasing the scale of the rewards and also by giving rewards depending on the score achieved during tourney not only ranking (positive effect: it diminishes the importance of your entry timing). Everyone would be happy if the minimum reward was a pair of stun guns or cuffs at level 85 for example.

Cheaters. We can detect the obvious ones, but not players with good roster cheating. Moreover, they rigged the competition as a weak team can take a top spot, inflating the scores as other weak team can beat it repeatedly. A solution for other players to report cheaters is to display how many AP a player spent for his score. A thin roster who spent a lot might take a top position (although not excluding that the players still cheats). I stop playing my last Tie Advanced when I saw 8 cheaters on my top 25.

There is a wrong information about weak teams you beat: you can battle them more than once, there is just cooler time before you can hit them again, this should be made public. This a negative side effect of clearly inflating score as all players hit the same weak teams again and again.

There is absolutely no benefit in setting a high quality defense: it will keep inflating the score for everyone, but if you have enough AP it just makes your opponent spent AP as your offensive depends not on the team at your level but on the weakest team of your server. This could be easily corrected by giving players bonus point on how many times they were attacked and won, as well as the number of times the team was attacked (the lower is the number the bigger bonus should be).

Mods are not frozen for defense team allowing collaboration between players and also reducing your offensive power as you might have your best set of mods on your defense team. Solution: freeze the overall stats of each member of a team.

Getting low star toons is better than getting nothing, but it is almost useless to get shards as of now: the main bottleneck for most players are the usual gear asked by anyone (stun guns, cuffs, holoprojectors, carbantis sensors array ). So please consider making tourney for gear only!

What I don't mind:

New OP toons are introduced via tourney. This could be annoying, but I understand CG has to finance their work.
I hope it was a constructive feedback and I wish other players comments with their experience and develop their idea at best so that Devs can get honest and relevant opinions from dedicated players.

Side note: I really appreciate the communication on reddit from the studio (many share my view), not so much on the official forum were Devs were silent on too many topics.
  • I would like to be constructive, and say something that can be fixed or is good about them, but I can't.

    Sorry!

  • I would also like to contribute something positive and constructive about tournaments:

    I agree with most of the original post - but strongly disagree with the above. New toons can be introduced via tournaments. However, making them OP serves no purpose except to drastically disturb game balance.

    This obviously wouldn't be an issue if the payouts for tournaments weren't so incredibly top-heavy. A tournament structure where less than 1% get the 7* unlock, while most get nothing at all, is not very helpful to game balance - especially when that 7* character is ridiculously OP.

    It is also that very structure that encourages cheating. If the top prize wasn't OP and so incredibly difficult and time consuming to attain, there would be no reason to risk it for those that do.

  • Agree with a lot of that. To me, the 2 biggest issues, with fairly easy fixes are:

    1. Transparency. People hate guessing how things work.

    How does the matching work? Please just tell us. Is it based on when you started playing the game, your top 5, your arena team, arena rank, your defense team, pot luck etc.

    I had 3 very good draws in the early tournaments, but the last 4 have been awful - even trying going in early, mid way and very late made no difference. So was it pot luck, or did leveling my toons past a certain threshold cause a dramatic shift in how I was matched?

    2. Feeling of pot luck, and moving goalposts.

    Its simply not fair that some people can unlock with a score of 3000 because pot luck puts them on an easy server, whilst others score 5000 on a hard server and get nothing. What's worse, is you may be sitting on 4000 and all set to get the character, then in the last 10 minutes, the goalposts move and you lose out. Why not set the rewards based on points thresholds. e.g. 3000 for an unlock, 4000 to get it at the next star level. etc. Then you are leveling the playing field (fixes point 1 a bit too), and setting a clear goal that if you meet you WILL get the character. Although you still have to make sure the teams people are matched against in the battles are fair.

    I think these two changes would make a huge difference, and people would start enjoying tournaments.
