Because I don't want dozens of favorited characters? You can only focus working on so much at once but raids and gear challenges and the like will give you gear those characters don't need but others that'd be on a "tier 2" would need.
I mean, I guess. Personally I never favorite and gear more than 3-4 characters at a time. I always found that trying to spread gear around across 2-3 entire teams resulted in very little tangible progress and a lot of frustration. Have you tried narrowing your focus?
The focus is the characters needed for earning General Skywalker and his team. That's about 20 characters. 5 Ewoks, 3PO, Padme, Ahsoka, GK, Shaak Ti, JKA, Asajj, B1, B2, Droideka, Magnaguard, Echo, Rex, Fives, ARC Trooper, and since I may use their ships, plo koon, clone sergeant, and mace windu for his capital ship.
Anyone who will be working towards any EC character will be needing to work on 10+ characters overall, and as you get some geared up to 11+, the gear pieces for geting from 8-11 won't be needed by them anymore, but will be needed on the next set of 5 or so.
My padme team characters don't need gear (outside of Shaak Ti), some of the separatists and Asajj are geared, but I get things that the clones need, but they're not the things I'm currently farming, just gear that I get from raids, guild activities, and daily challenges and daily rewards..
I get what you're saying, but there's no reason you have to do all of this at the same time. I don't have General Skywalker yet either, but when I do go for him, I won't be favoriting 15 characters at once.
I'll work on my clones/pilots first. Once they're in shape I'll move on to Shaak Ti, 3P0, and whoever else for the 2nd phase (can't remember the full team off the top of my head). And so on.
Ultimately it probably doesn't cut down the overall time to be ready for the event, but it gets you characters that are actually
usable in the meantime rather than just sitting on a pile of G10 junk for months at a time.
Best example in your case is that you only need like, G10-11 Ewoks to get 7-star C3P0; if you just focus on them and nothing else you could have that done really quickly. Now you've got C3P0 and can make use of him in other squads while you're prepping for GS - he can easily be used offensively at G9 or so.
If you do end up with some extra gear lying around that the other characters can use, cool - when you move on to them you'll be able to bang out a couple gear levels quickly. There's no reason you have to immediately spend gear just because it's in your inventory.
