Palpatine needed the public and the Senate to believe that the Separatist army had been defeated by the Galactic Republic, which was about to become the Galactic Empire. Plus, the droid factories on Geonosis had been destroyed in the war and the population was later wiped out by the Empire in order to keep the Death Star secret.
