There should be an exit button besides restarting game. This is a game function problem, besides it being true that the kits cause it. Yes, it is true it is your fault for bringing them, however you should not be forced to go 5 or 15 minutes or restart the game as a result. In any other game users would view that as a feature that needs to get fixed. Timeout is fine, but you should be able to take the L with a button.

Then let it time out
I'm just explaining the complaint. Of course you can let it time out. The question is, should you have to? If yes, why? Adding a "quit, but keep progress" button doesn't seem unreasonable.
