Rex, lando, DN and Boba are all characters that will work later stages of the game.
JC is good for ships when you open that up. Other than that, he's not someone who you will use after level 70 except for ships. Luke and Lumi don't really have any pratctical uses in the game.
Start farming Wedge and Biggs as soon as you can do you can unlock EP. ackbar will help with that too.
Read through some of the threads on here. There's a lot of great advice.
