Phasma + FOO + kylo + ? + ?

In general, I'm not at a level where i can pick and choose specific teams for game modes

I'm assuming you haven't farmed FOTP or FOST, they're both difficult farms and haven't been useful unless you're a die-hard FO fan. If you don't have FOTP, Princess Leia is a great substitution, plays the same role but lacks the FO synergy. Plus she gives Crit Chance Up, which is effective for Kylo if he uses up his advantage. You should try PL and RG and let us know how that works out.

Biggs + Wedge will bring you some good firepower, but are likely first targets in that squadron. Dooku brings nothing to the table. And Boba fits well in most squads, but without a serious debuffer paired alongside you really miss out on his potential.

If you're low to mid level you should farm FOTP and FOST. It's a slow and grindy farm, but believe me. It's worth it. I started FOTP as soon as I could (since I got lucky and got him in a Chromioum back then) and the other FO characters little after that. I got bored of the grind and stopped farming FOST and FOTP. Now after their reworks, I regret doing that. That team is great for every aspect of the game. Good damage in both Raids (specially normal and Heroic AAT), can solo GW, Top Arena team (with at least Kylo and Phasma zeta you can beat any Sith team out there) and Offense mods challenge, which are needed if you want to make a team with Darth Nihilus lead in the future.
If still you don't want to farm them then you could go Leia, Boba or TFP instead of FOTP and Fives, B2, Sun Fac or RG instead of FOST.

I definitely recognize you as THE First Order authority on these forums. I'm glad the FO has arguably the best synergy again, but I'm not totally sold on FOO. His kit does become interesting when maxed out, but I can't help but think that a more dedicated cleanser would do the job better (Rex, but Zarriss more specifically). I know a lot of FO's strength is to outlast opponents, real war-of-attrition style, and FOO seems squishier than some real good alternatives.

So convince me, what am I missing out on? Is all the TM, advantage, and call-to-assist trickery really worth it for that fifth spot? And if you had to substitute any one FO member out, who would you put in and why?

You need a tank to protect your characters. Boba and STH/Sun Fac works well.

I have Sun Fac, FOST and FOTP already but admittedly all at terrible gear and star levels but for me i guess I'm gonna work on

Phasma, kylo, FOO, sun fac, leia

I will eventually swap in FOTP but as he is 1* with only hard nodes and my leia is good then I will proceed like that

note: would rey do a better job than leia?

from what i have heard fost is a bad decision though?

Well, While there isn't any FO synergy here to capitalize on Dooku... bringing nothing, may be a little much.

His basic can offer multi-attack, stun and ability block and can not be countered.... again, a basic! His Special has stun + stun another enemy, too. Stunning taunters makes for a smooth run most of the time. Also, both of these ability double vs. Jedi which is really fun against teams trying to run double healers (JC/Lumi/Barris).

Add the 100% counter and bonus damage when attacking outside his turn combined with Phasma lead 2X chance of Assist and activating Dooku's basic when another FO (Kylo/FOO) is attacking and you have a bit more than "nothing" imo.

FOST has a great 65% chance for counter too which I love on a tainted
