- Just wait till we get past zeta abilities and have to work for Tetra abilities. Then he'll be T-Rex. You think this is bad? Wait till that day comes. He'll never go extinct.
- Ha ha ha!
- Rex has a solid leadership ability, though he is generally a weak character (low protection and health). I feel like he's fairly balanced and I've seen a wide variety of other leaders in my shard: ZGJ, Tarkin, Thrawn, GK, Wedge all hold their own, and a few Zauls even continue to hang out in the top 20 and make #1 each day.
So I have to wonder whether the question is due to frustration in not having a team strong enough to beat the Rex's easily in your shard, or whether we honestly think Rex is broken and/or should go away?
Rex's prevalence is due, not because he's broken, per se, but because he is a decent leader for people that don't have a coherent faction team to fit under another leader, and he helps make up for the speed difference if you don't have spectacular speed mods. - Not frustrated by Rex, although admittedly Sith teams struggle on my arena shard, more the point I made about zMaul. Given a brief run then hard counter but Rex seems impervious to any real counter. Unless Thrawn is it (who I don't have, alas) :(

Nihilius lead was the counter. It just didn't go over well enough to do away with Rex.- CiiidrSeasoned Newcomer

Well, Thrawn certainly isn't a hard counter to Rex. He actually works really well on a Rex team. - Ha! Yes of course! Kind of underlines my original question!

I think there's a couple of good reasons for this: Zeta Maul is very faction-specific. Also, dodge was very annoying and broken. (No, Maul dodging 7 out of 8 times, consistently in my playing, does not equate to the 45% evasion he was supposed to have.) He was broken to the point that the top 20 had become nothing but Zaul teams for many shards. He needed a counter, because CG has a policy of no nerfs that aren't bug fixes.
Looking at the arena today, Zaul teams struggle a bit more, but can still make it.
Why is Rex blamed as being OP or needing an "end to the reign of Rex"? It's not solely because his leader ability is overpowered or broken. It's because he is one of the few leaders that fit well with the powerful characters with interesting abilities that people want to play. We have Nihilus, Thrawn, GK, Chaze, R2, you could add in Kylo or Shoretrooper. You can form a team with 5 of them but you won't have a decent leader ability that helps the whole team. Rex fits in with not only a team-wide applicable leader ability, but also a halfway decent move kit.
Other leaders need a dedicated team built around them: ZGJ, Thrawn, Tarkin, Zaul, Zader. The closest you can get to a mix team with a leader other than Rex that I've seen so far is a GK lead, usually just because that makes GK a little tankier, sometimes with a Zarriss alongside him.
The difference between Zaul's reign and what people like to call Rex's reign is that Zaul before R2 basically didn't let anyone else play in the top 20. Rex is sitting in the top twenty alongside a handful of other leaders that I've mentioned.
Rex isn't exactly king of the arena anymore. If he is in your shard that's just because you don't have others that have desired to think outside the box and build other competitive teams.- Wow. Having Rex as lead is hardly "thinking outside of the box" now is it?
As for Rex being OP I never commented to that effect or intended to insinuate it. I was wondering why - given that he had been around for a good while - he still remains the outstanding squad leader given others have come and gone in far less time.
Question though. Why should a Rex-like leader be so effective in terms of knitting together so many disparate characters and factions? Again what is so particularly original about a dog's dinner of a squad that works purely because of a Rex leadership? Or is that your idea of thinking outside of the box? - Oh sorry. Misunderstood your point about others not countering Rex by thinking outside of the box. My bad!
