Extra character shards ?

I bought both lightspeed bundles that include veteran smuggler han solo twice at the same level. In the description it states "any previously unlocked units meet or exceed the bundle upgrade criteria for other attributes any surplus will be retained" im assuming this means i will gain character shards? I'm unsure i just know I've bought multiple lightspeed bundles with one or more characters I already have and got no extra character currency. I am unsure what said statement means but my belief was extra character shards.
