Sims 1

couldn't figure out where to put this, but I purchased the legacy birthday bundle. every time I try to download The Sims 1, it gets to 96% and then errors due to a C++ issue. would love to not have the installation fail everytime... I used to get this same type of error when trying to load Sims 3, luckily no more thanks to the recent update so thank you for that!

  • Update... I am now getting the same error message trying to download The Sims 2.

"Error: The VC++ runtime redistributable package was not installed successfully. Setup cannot continue. (1618)"

  • caralaurenn  Have you tried reinstalling the 2015 and newer VC++ runtimes?  If not, please do so now, as the other reply suggested.  More specific instructions are here, under "Game won't launch":

If that doesn't help, try the same but for your 2010 VC++ runtimes, and if that doesn't help either, replace the 2013 runtimes.  You can find new copies (both x86 and x64 in both cases) here:

this did not work... I downloaded both packages and tried to run the programs and they failed to install, same as the games.

I'm running a brand new and up to date system and I can't even get these to install wth @eagames :((((

  • caralaurenn  If you uninstalled your current copies of the runtimes and tried to reinstall these, but they refused to install, that sounds like a system issue.  What error did you get?  Please post a screenshot.

Please also run a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

    Captains log day 903893287126234

I don't know what to say, I'm following the steps you're laying out to the best of my ability and I have yet to be able to install either The Sims 1 or The Sims 2 legeacy collection birthday let down.

As far as uninstalling, installing etc, I'm doing everything correctly as far as my knowledge. At this point I've adjusted the C++ redistributables several times now. I would think The Sims would be a big enough game to put out that you wouldn't have to be a hackergirl to figure out how to install it?? Literally losing my mind over here.

I am going to the EA app. I am accessing the games from my library, where they have sat collecting dust since purchase. I am going to install and I am getting to 96% on both The Sims 1 and the Sims 2 birthday bundle. I am then experiencing the error I mentioned earlier.

"Error: The VC++ runtime redistributable package was not installed sucessfully. Setup cannot continue. (1618)"

Regardless and with dwindling hope I have again tried all the fixes you've offered.

As far as the 1st boot command option, "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" runs successfully, nothing weird there, cool cool cool.

As far as second, the "“sfc /scannow” command, also runs successfully. This message was given-

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag."

Coooool. Hard shutdown, walk away, come back, restart, run system security update things no issues nothing weird ok cool. Open my EA App and once again attempt to download either game. Same error:

"Error: The VC++ runtime redistributable package was not installed sucessfully. Setup cannot continue. (1618)"

I fear soon I will need to be given a straight jacket and put in a soft room

  • caralaurenn  Please do a clean uninstall of the EA App with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine), just to be thorough.  Restart before reinstalling the App.  Create a new folder into which you'll be installing your games.  This folder should be on the root level of the drive of your choice, for example C:\Games is fine, but not C:\Program Files\Games.

If that doesn't help, let's skip over some interim steps and go straight to a repair install of Windows.  This doesn't delete user data and gives you the cleanest version of Windows you can get without actually wiping the drive.  (It's not an actual clean install, to be clear, just the next-best available option.)  Here's how:

    Windows 10:  https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html
    Windows 11:  https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-windows-11-with-an-in-place-upgrade.418/

For 11, use option two.  As mentioned, this shouldn't delete any data, but if you get to step 13 or 14, respectively, and are NOT asked to keep personal files and apps, back out and start over.

When you've finished, uninstall all the VC++ runtimes listed, restart your computer, and reinstall the runtimes from the links I posted earlier.  The 2010, 2013, and 2022 runtimes should be sufficient for Sims 1 and 2, but if not, or another app needs a different version, here are the others:

    2005:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26347
    2008:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26368
    2012:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679

In all cases, install the x86 and x64 runtimes IF there's any indication you need them, but skip the ARM or IA64 version, as those are for a different class of device.  As always, reinstall after installing any runtime and before trying to do install or play any game.
