Crashing when loading family

I got sims 2 legacy on the day of release and I have played it multiple times since then with no issues. Out of the blue, it now crashes every time I try to load a household. I saw on a different thread that entering an empty lot in build mode and turning off the shadows fixed the problem for some people… not for me. Still crashing every time…. Any suggestions?
