Hi! You don't have to worry so much if things were made before 2010, a lot of these still work fine.
For skins I love Lilith's. There are some CC and some that are default replacements. http://lilith-sims.tumblr.com/ You will have to search a bit, as it is a tumblr.

Clothing http://www.lianasims2.net/index.php has some nice things, it really just depends what your style is, hard to recommended such things. Jewelry is tough, as a lot of the meshes used in the past are no longer available for the best stuff :/
If you were interested in default face replacements I recommended these http://www.digitalperversion.net/gardenofshadows/?topic=1942.0 Very subtle differences in them, but they get rid of the ugly ones maxis made :D
