Save Corruption Fix

You probably got this error when you tried to open a saved game:

"A serious Error has occurred while trying to load Appoloossa.sims3. It is strongly recommended that you restart the application."

if you did, there is a fix. I'm sure loads of you went online to find a solution but no fix, but I'll tell you this, DON'T GIVE UP!

so how do you fix this problem?

First before starting, copy and paste your corrupted save on the desktop just in case you have to restart again and you have a copy. This is achieved by going to My Computer -> Documents -> Electronic Arts -> Saves

From that window you can see all these folders:

These folders are the saves that you have currently in your game. Now go to the file you have problems with (The save with the error in it.) and copy and paste to your desktop. Just in case something goes screwy.

When I had this problem, I noticed by looking at the other saves that worked and my corrupted one is there was something different about it.

There was an extra file, it had the same ending to it, -export.

Corrupted file

Non-Corrupted file

We want to deal with the corrupted file, with the -export.

So go and restart the game and make a new save. MAKE SURE THE NEW SAVE IS IN THE EXACT TOWN YOUR OLD CORRUPTED SAVE WAS. Now, don't waste time, just name the family whatever and place them wherever. Just save the game, put something like test or something as the save name. Save and quit.

Go back to the Electronic Arts folder and go to the saves folder again. Go to the save folder that has the same name of the game you just saved.

Once you go to that folder you will see these files.

The ones you want to copy are these:

-1a5tf1I3.dat
-Meta.data
-TravelDB.package

After copying and pasting them to your desktop, go to the corrupted file, the save file that you had the error happen in and take all these files and put them on the save, replace the old ones with these. Make sure you take out the -export file out as well.

Then just restart your computer and restart the game.

What you will see in the main menu is a save with the same name of the new save you made before, but it has the picture original sims you lost, and just an outline of a house. Just load the save and you should have your old save with everything in tact.

Make sure you DOUBLE SAVE after opening up the old save. You can do this by going to the edit town, and did save as and do a new save and normal saving. So now you have the normal save you always save with and another one just in case the game decides to be mean and do it again. It's going to be an old save, but at least you have your old data and saved.

I just wanted to post this, in hope that it can help someone that was like me that it seemed nothing worked, but there is one last solution. It happen again, but I think this is a good last resort.

I hope this helped!

EDIT:

I noticed that in our new files from the newer games have two town saves for two reasons:

1) One or more sims are in University: I suggest that people do the same trick as I typed above but make sure you put the sims (The ones that you were told to just make a new game and put in the same town the corrupted file was),to university. If they are poor, do the motherlode cheat, so they can go to university. and Just save and quit after they arrive. Then keep following the steps as I typed above.

2) You move sims from one town to another: Just do the same trick, as above, but instead just move them to the same town you moved from; ex: I made a family in Twinbrook but moved them to Moonlight Falls, then do the same thing to the new game sim save and then save and quit after they arrive. Then keep following the steps as I typed above.

    THIS SAVED MY GAME.

I tried any and everything, and was seriously about to give up on the whole thing. I also had to try it TWICE, because the first time I did it on the backup file and it didn't work. I then did EVERYTHING you said, step-by-step (and the export files WERE in the corrupted save files) and it WORKED!! from a few saves before that, oddly enough.....but it worked! and I have my neighborhood back! I was seriously going to quit playing if I didn't get this one back, I've had to restart soooo many times.

    Thanks so much!

no prob! I'm glad it worked! I was going to give up as well, but I was like, "NO WAY! I worked so hard on the house and it looked so cute! No way!" So I kept going and going, stayed up until 3 am and it worked! I was like, HELLZ YEAH!

    I'm glad I could help!

Just make sure you double save. go to the edit town and do "save as" there. So you have two saves, one when you save normally and one that you have in case you end up having the same prob. It's gonna be an old save, but at least you have a back up data on it.
  • I also forgot to mention. If you do cheats like the testingcheatsenabled ones and movingobjects, make sure you TURN THEM OFF before saving and quitting. I have a feeling it was these cheats that corrupted my save because I forgot to turn them off.

Remember this version of these cheats in the Sims 3 are not as powerful as the Sims 2 ones were, but they are still powerful enough to hurt your game, remember to turn them off before saving and quitting!
  • I did all this and still have the problem :(

Do I have to delete cache files too? where are they?
  • bookmarked! :D
had issues with this not too long ago
    thanks for posting!
  • YES this actually worked, on the second try! The game is running super slow but it's back! I had one town for YEARS and was like...no way am I just gonna let it go!

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I was going crazy when this happened to me today and no one else seemed to know how to fix it. But this worked for me!

Since my Sim had traveled in World Adventures I had Export files for her home and all three locations. I moved them all to my desktop and did everything else you said. I deleted my cache files and voilà! My Sim was a few saves back but I was just glad to have saved her.

The cache files are the ones that I pointed out on the first post, don't erase them, but keep them on the desktop while you work out the kinks. Did you make a new sim in the same town? if you did, you just save, go back to the sims ea folder on your computer, look for the same files with the new sim, copy them, past them on the save of the sim you want to fix, then close and restart the computer and game. Then come back and in the game click on the picture with the outline of a house that's the fixed sims.

If none of this worked, put back the same files you placed on the desktop to the save you tried to fix. I don't know what else to tell you except don't give up and keep searching for a fix. There's gotta be something to fix this.

how do u know which file is the corrupted one :?: :)

It's the one with the name of the save you have problems with. Mine was called Applepolossa, so when you go to documents> Electronic Arts> saves; you should find the save with the name you placed when you saved your game.

I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU RIGHT NOW. Many thanks. I am so appreciative of this and it is now bookmarked. I have had such an ordeal within the past 2 days.

This whole problem for me was my fault: I downloaded a possibly damaging mod for my game carelessly. I think this is what caused the corruption. All of my games corrupted, but there was only one I really cared about.

I had my previous game that I had worked SO hard on crash in a completely irreversible way. I was heartbroken. I am now on my 3rd generation in my current game, and I was DETERMINED to not let this one slip through my fingers.

I first deleted the suspicious mod, then followed what you said step by step. When I tried to restart my computer as the last step though, I ran into a different problem. My entire operating system crashed and failed. I got the "blue screen of death", and I tried EVERYTHING to restore my computer, nothing worked. I was so scared I screwed with my hardware. Then, after some unsuccessful digging, I tried to think intuitively and fix my own problems, as you did with the corruption problem. I found on my own that there was a problem with the sims game drive and it was messing with the reboot of my computer. I simply ejected the game disc and viola! It worked fine now, even after reinserting the disc.

And when I brought the game up again, MY SIMS WERE BACK! AND I HAD NO SAVE LAG, IT WAS EXACTLY WHERE I LEFT OFF! I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW! Thank you so much, I will be sharing this with anyone who has a corruption problem. It is unbelievably helpful and really works.

Well, let me tell you, I will never be downloading sketchy mods ever again. That was absolutely terrifying. Especially the computer start up problem. Thanks again, you are wonderful.

No problem! I learned my lesson a long time ago about mods, so I hope you are careful in the future with them!

I'm glad to be of help!
