abnormal program termination

just ordered  the sims 3 university life ep but I got the sims 3 plus university set in the mail. I was not expecting the base game since i had not need for it but anyway I tried to install the university cd only but all my comeputer keeps saying is there is a runtime error and abnormal program termination. Is the disk deffective or is there somthing else going on because I have never had a problem instaling ep's on my toshiba laptop nor have I ever had any issures runnning the game.
