Bizarre Inventory Problems / Related to Cannot Build

(Continued from/related to, I believe, crash on save issues I was having previously. http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/Constant-crashing-when-saving-after-building/m-p/551210 )

* It seemed my issues with being unable to save had been resolved. I moved into a prebuilt house, I was able to build on that house as well as buy objects and place them. A critical test passed in the replacement of ruined umbrellas from inventory. Game saves were quick, loads were quick. Game play quick.

* Insert some couple hours of play here. As I grew a bit more confident (and struggling with holidays and 3 day work weeks trying to get to lifetime wish fulfillment) I had a lot of time on my hands. Remodeling done, no problem. Noticed one achievement (tossing elixirs) had been lost when previously earned. No proof on thesims3.com player page; suspect a crash too close to winning it was the culprit. Re-earned it. And... finally decided to start moving objects out of player inventory into fridge or bookcase.

The ONLY suspicious behavior up to this point was attempting to do a private reading on a sim in town to complete an opportunity and as the reading SEEMED to finish, the sim reset. (Not one I was playing.) Just disappeared and went home it seemed. I tried to track them down, and got the 'no no no' response repeatedly, even though best friends. All I could surmise was that they already had their 'private reading for the day.' Later completed opportunity without issue (day or so later).

* And so, problems begin when I begin putting books into bookcases. I start sorting books into various bookcases. Skills into one, recipes another, self-written another, childrens, fiction etc, fishing, so forth. The household sim who carried the books from the original house I couldn't build walls or delete them in ... I had been manually doing this and I thought hey, fancy 'put away books in inventory' button. So I clicked it.

Something odd happened. A ton of books appeared out of NOWHERE that I could not account for. Now, some items seemed to be missing after the move for this one sim (just the skill awards for maxing a skill). But these books came out of nowhere -- not the sims inventory and they were not in household inventory as far as I could see previously. No bookcases. I was CAREFUL on the move. I pulled books out of the bookcase into personal inventory, and deleted the bookcases. Same with fridge etc. I wanted to maintain quality of honey, fruit etc. I wanted control over the inventory. I just let a few miscellaneous things go into household, and I *manually* put them there. (Gnomes, wildflowers, rocks, etc.)

So these books appeared out of nowhere. I sorted them into bookcases. Things started to seem to slow down. I got to the festival site, and wherever I clicked on the ground, instead of 'move to' and other typical interactions, I got 'use' interactions for things that should have been deleted. Trash. Read a book. Other things. On the grass. Invisible objects that are not there. I try to read one. No path to object.

This seems bad. (Duh.) I save, thinking maybe quitting and restarting will clean up trash.

* Restart the game after too long a save and waaaay too long a start up. But no crashing. Things seem to be working for a little while, ten fifteen minutes. Then I send a sim off to the toilet. Misclick and hit the floor and get 'read ... book title.' No matter where I click on the floor I get this. Pretty sure if I try to put it away, I'll get no path to object.

Now, what did I do? All I did was sort through the books, and delete a lot of extras/duplicates. I don't need 12 copies of cooking 1, or 16 logic 1, or 3 of this child's book etc. I dragged them over the 'Drag here to sell' and sold them. Only the same freaking thing that SEEMED to happen the other day in the old house happened here. The objects sold, and duplicated themselves and dropped invisible copies all over the place.

The other day this most notably happened with umbrellas. Most notably because they break all the time, and if I have to replace them every other day, by going into build/buy (why they don't just have a click/replace option I don't know...) buy one, put it on the floor, drag the old one into the trash from the inventory of the player, and then put the new one into the inventory. Only more than half the time, the OLD broken one ends up sold and also on the floor.

I found I had to level my kitchen because I couldn't get to the fridge. No route. I had to move it and I could use it. No rotten food blocking use, none of the 'typical things' wrong. But -- after leveling the kitchen, repeatedly dragging and dropping every which way and replacing stencil, one time dragging harvested vegetables to the fridge I saw some on the floor. No, I did not miss. One time moving food to the fridge and selling money tree harvest, I sold the money and it ALSO ended up on the floor.

Is 'drag here to sell' an open hole through to the empty space of the game? It just floats around everywhich way?

This is essentially repeatable. I can keep dragging stuff to the 'sell' space in inventory, and eventually I'll end up with crud on the floor. No, I'm not missing. I can make double the money. I don't want/need the extra 54 simoleans from a broken umbrella. I don't want 200 invisible books that now make the floor unusable.

So. Known issue? What do I do? How do I salvage the game? Do the move out of lot, save to bin, nuke lot thing?

Will quitting the game get rid of invisible trash floating around community lots, does it force a clean up?

I am NOT using any mods. Just my store cc, all my expacs/stuff packs. This is NOT a bug I have ever had before in four years of playing.

Ok, while pondering what to do I went back into the game and did a little testing.

    * When I click on the ground at a community lot I get normal ground/terrain. Testing my own inquiry and answering my question. The book-ground is gone from the festival ground and things are normal everywhere OTHER than my house. Both sims in the household experience this.

When I try to move in the house, one sim sees books to read, the other sees 'Brianna is going home now' -- so a sim object that isn't there.

    * I go into build/buy to see if this is related to (or if I now cannot) build walls. Lo and behold, I cannot manipulate walls correctly now.

I CAN build a wall, but I cannot delete the wall that I just built.

    I CAN delete foundation.

    I CANNOT delete wall.

I seem to be able to manipulate anything else in the house.

I have NEVER hung holdiay lights at this house.

Honestly, everything was fine until I clicked 'put away books from inventory' and/or started trying to delete duplicate copies of books.

WHEN I try to manipulate an existing wall, I see the K tool (delete tool) hover over pumpkins, elixirs of job boost, etc, other strange things. These things were in personal inventory during the move or are things I own now in the household.

It is not raining; it is 4 days to winter. It was raining when I saved out of the game to quit and restart (when I was suddenly having issues with the ground acting like objects).

I am tired of trying to get this to work, I am going to bed. Looking for suggestions on how to salvage this game. I can go back to the prior save before the ground turned to books and elixirs and lose a few game days. I don't know why this inventory duping thing is happening.

I don't know what to do about this issue or how to stop it. I have been wary of putting anything on the ground at all, and now I no longer trust the 'drag here to sell' option, but this is leaving me fewer ways to get rid of things. This does bring to mind that the last house I abandoned and bulldozed the lot on where I had this 'cannot manipulate the walls' issue, when I was leaving the abandoned empty lot, everything sold/bulldozed that I could, mouse hovered over stairs that I couldn't get rid of and I saw 'Ghost of some Goth' and I thought what the heck? Why is there a ghost stuck in my house. Is that the problem? I don't think it was THE problem, but now I think it is indicative OF the problem -- the whole game getting confused that a wall is a wall and should be treated like one, and not some player object that I can't just simply bulldoze and redraw.

Am I the only one experiencing self-cloning umbrellas? Delete that deletes, gives you money and also spits the object magically out on the ground, sometimes visible and sometimes not?

Anyway, like I said, suggestions please.

Copy to bin, evict, bulldoze, move back in etc etc? Go live at the firestation and give up on building? I need to eke out 1 or 2 more sim weeks to finish this stupid achievement before I can just scrap the entire neighborhood and go try over -- the sad thing is, though, based on forum activity, I don't think it's 'just me' and having a bad game file or something.

Should I try mods? I have not been using anything this install. Not any of the 3 I used to (and yes this is a fresh game untainted by mods).

Well faced with shutting down, and knowing I was not going to save...

    * I went to edit town.

    * I saved a copy of the entire household to the bin. This was very fast.

    * I moved the family to the clipboard along with the house.

    * Once family was evicted, I saved the house structure (I had done remodeling).

Even mousing over the house from map view I could see bottle of nectar I had never owned. Meh.

    * I bulldozed the lot. No more strange things on the lot. Nice happy shiny empty lot.

    * I placed the bin copy to the newly emptied lot.

    * I moused over in map view, no more nectar or pumpkins.

    * Made this the active household.

Seems ok now, for the moment. I know why I had been hesitant to do this, losing perfect items in the fridge etc. I also know I was forced to do this on my original house lot due to seeds and umbrellas that could not be deleted from the floor / ground. Seeds that spawned from the garden premium content that I never picked up eventually bugged and I could not EVER pick them up, and as mentioned before, one time replacing umbrellas, in addition to duplicating, well, they became unclickable/unmovable/undeletable even in build/buy mode. So I've used this "trick" (if you can call such heavy handed measures a trick) to address other inventory/item managment and trash management issues.

Also perhaps related, the singing plants v zombie sunflower I had in the garden, the items do not decay after the time they claim. Something seems just plain wrong with trash cleanup.
