  • @SimmerEllaine  Honestly, I'm not sure that there's a way to play TS3 on your computer.  Its components are old, both in terms of when they were made and the amount of use they've probably had so far.  Even new, this hardware wouldn't be expected to run more than the base game and one or two early packs.  But whether your computer is starting to fail or it just can't keep up with the demands of the game, it just doesn't seem like a good idea to try to play TS3.  Even if you did get it running, the your computer might break down from the stresses the game would place on it.  I'm sorry not to have better news.

If you really want to play a Sims game, you might have better luck with TS2.  It would have run beautifully on your hardware ten years ago, and it might still work out well now.

  • @SimmerEllaine  Were you ever able to play TS3 on this system, or is this the first time you've tried?  I'm not sure how many packs you're running, or which ones, but this computer is far under recommendations to run TS3 and all its packs.  Your graphics card is not nearly strong enough for the demands of this game—the recommendation now is an Nvidia 960 or 1050 ti or equivalent.  Additionally, you only have 4 GB RAM total, much of which will be used by your OS.  The current recommendation is 8 GB RAM, with 6 being the absolute minimum.  The base game and a couple of early packs might be fine, but Pets and Seasons could be beyond your computer's capabilities, and IP and ITF might be as well.

Having said all that, the first troubleshooting step to try (provided you've played TS3 on this computer before) is to pull your options.ini file out of Documents\EA\TS3 and launch the game again.  This will reset your graphics options, which may not be compatible with your system.  If this works, you can adjust some of the options again, but if you adjust the resolution, make sure it's supported by your computer.

If this doesn't help, the next step is to pull your entire TS3 game folder out of Documents and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game again, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  Play in this folder for a bit, making sure everything works, and then you can start moving your saves and other content into it from your old folder.

If these steps don't work, please list your packs and what kind of install (Origin, Steam, disc) you have.

@SimmerEllaine  You're not bothering me at all; this site exists precisely to help people like you.

This particular computer probably can't be upgraded, at least not in a way that would support TS3.  Although this is not my area of expertise, I would guess that the motherboard wouldn't be able to accommodate the hardware you'd need to support running TS3.  Even if it could, at the very least, you'd have to buy a new processor and graphics card, more RAM, and probably a new power supply to support it all.  Given the cost of all that hardware, you might as well buy a new computer.

Desktop computers that can run all of TS3 on high settings generally cost at least $700 U.S., and will cost more in other countries, although sales can bring the price down a bit.  With only the base game and Showtime, you might be able to cut some corners to bring the price down, but I couldn't tell you how much you'd have to pay.  If you decide you'd like to buy a new computer, you could post in the thread on the Sims forums that's specifically dedicated to helping new members with their technical issues.  Just list your budget, country, and anything else you would need your computer to do besides run TS3.  You could also list the specs of an existing computer before you buy it to find out whether it would meet your needs.
