@abc1247333681 Move the entire Sims 3 folder to the desktop and try again.
If that doesn't help, please open Terminal, in Applications > Utilities, copy and paste this command, and enter:
find / -name "Version.tag" 2>/dev/null
Then post the results. (Feel free to black out or delete your username, but please leave the rest intact.) I'd like to see whether there's another copy of this file lurking somewhere on your computer, and if so, where it is.
- @puzzlezaddict Hi. Thanks a lot. Unfortunately It still doesn't work.
Do you have any other suggestions? Hi

@abc1247333681 I've moved your post to the master thread for this error message. Please go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 and delete Version.tag.
Hi
I have issues with my Sims 3 as well on my Macbook.
The attached image is the message I get, when I try to play the game with the EA-app.
I have tried to uninstall and then download the game several times now - but it's still not working.
Please, is this something you can assist with?
Thank you in advance
@amyamelia91 Please move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and try again to play.
If this doesn't help, let me know whether you have iCloud Drive enabled and syncing Documents. Open System Preferences/Settings > Apple ID, click iCloud on the left, and see whether iCloud Drive is checked. If it is, click Options, and you'll see which folders are syncing. If iCloud Drive is enabled, please also let me know how much free and total storage you have, and whether Optimize Mac Storage is enabled, both towards the bottom of the window.
Please also let me know whether you use a third-party antivirus or some kind of cleaner app.
- @puzzlezaddict I’m very late to this party, I’ve just updated my Mac, downloaded the 64 bit version and had the same message about ‘incompatible base game” I followed your instructions and deleted the version tag file. And when I go to relaunch the game it’s giving me a blank screen with a spinning wheel. What do I do now? Please help 🙏🏼
@sammyjd4 I've merged your post with the master thread for this issue. Please go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 and delete the file labeled Version.tag.
I recently downloaded two new expansion packs for Sims 3 via Origin (Late Night and Generations). Now it seems I have two versions of the game. When I open from my computer folder (Applications > Sims 3), the game dock launches but only shows my old expansion packs (Pets and Seasons). However, when I launch through Origin (find my game in Origin, hit play), the game launcher shows all four expansion packs which is great. It was working to play through Origin until yesterday when I tried to launch the game, it said:
"Your The Sims 3 Base Game is incompatible with the current Sims 3 Expansion Pack. Please update your game via the game launcher."
So, I tried "repairing" the game, and updating the content. Still I get the same message. I tried opening the computer version that only has the two expansion packs and it works but it's frustrating because I can't play with my new expansion packs.
Can anyone help me? What's going on? Please explain like I'm 5. It's so frustrating.
Oh. My. Gosh... THANK YOU SOOOOOO VERY MUCH!
Shoulda known it'd be one file lol! Wow. I'm simply thrilled! Thank you again!!!
