Downloading sims - storage
Hi guys! I just bought a new laptop and was going to download the sims 3 games via origin. The laptop
only has 64gb of storage but I bought a 1tb hard drive to plug in. Can I load the sims games to the hard drive?
@simmer335 You can install the game within a folder on the external drive; just change the install path in Origin. Your saves, mods, etc. are located in the folder labeled The Sims 3 within Documents\Electronic Arts, and the game won't read the contents of that folder unless it's in Documents. So you can't just drag and drop the folder to your external; to move it, you'd need to move the entire contents of Documents elsewhere, and that's not a good idea if you ever plan on having the external drive unplugged. You can of course store backups on the external, including any saves you're not currently playing.
Having said all that, laptops with small hard drives like that don't generally run Sims 3 very well. This class of laptop has very weak hardware not built to handle even moderately demanding games like TS3, nor does it have the proper cooling to protect the hardware. I'm not sure how well even the base game would run, although you can certainly try. But the most demanding packs (Pets, Seasons, then Island Paradise and Into the Future) would likely be out of the question, and even intermediate expansion packs (everything after Late Night) could well be too much.
Even if I knew your laptop's specs, it would be difficult to say exactly what you could expect from it, but I don't think that the game will run particularly well, and you might not have a very good play experience.
