Game does not work after 1.42 update.........

I went to ply my sims 3 game (with ALL expansion packs) the other day. There was a new update, so I tried o get it. I got an error...invalid file found or something like that. So I found the update somewhere else and it installed. Then the launcher pulled up and I click play......and NOTHING happened. So I have uninstalled everything and am reinstalling. I am having problems. The same thing is happening. This time I was able to download the update when I installed The Sims 3 base game. If the launcher pulls up.......areas like where you choose your world and where the ...'s are for the menu......there is nothing there and it won't allow me to login or anything. The buttons don't work. Since I installed Supernatural..... after the launcher pulls up and I click play.....once again...NOTHING happends. What can I do to fix this? My laptop meets all requirements and more. It played just fine before the update. I warned my kids NOT to install the update and their games are fine.
