Game freezes and lags

My computer has the following specifications:

Dell Studio XPS 8100

Windows 7 Home Edition, 64 bits

Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93 GHz

8.00 GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD 5700 series.

The problem is that when I begin to play Sims 3 (I have intalled all the expansion packs), the game freezes and lags, until it totally stops, and I have to force shut down the computer and begin again. This happens every time I play, so I decided to turn down all the visual settings of the game to the minimum. This works well, but I want to play with the best possible settings. Please, tell me what I need for this.
