Game freezes then crashes every few seconds

I am having an issue where a save will start to freeze, then crash. Once this happens the save file becomes unplayable, and will crash as soon as 30 seconds into the gameplay. I have tried almost everything - I have tried it with / without mods, I have excluded the game files in the DEPx, i have regenerated the game files (re-naming the game folder to 'old' and letting the game regenerate the files), I have re-installed the entire game all together, and have followed all the steps in the below thread:
Game crashing when camera moves too fast | EA Forums - 8325853

There doesn't seem to be just one trigger for this. It happens mostly when the camera is moving, and the game will just stop and close its self, but i have noticed it happens randomly too with no apparent trigger.

this seems to have only started when moving off of a laptop to a PC?! the game was excruciatingly slow on my laptop, but since upgrading to a PC (albeit not a gaming PC) this problem has started. In the 15+ years i have been playing the sims 3, i have never had this issue until now! Please help!!

Pleae also let me know whether you've taken steps to limit your in-game framerates, and also confirmed that the limit is being respected in the game.

Hi there -- apologies for the delayed response, I have been away from my computer! I have attached it below for you. I'm not entirely sure how to limit my in-game framerates though?

  • meganbrownhk  This is how you'd limit your in-game framerates:

[Read First] Running Sims 3 in Windows | EA Forums - 8323446

However, I'm not sure this is the issue given that your computer only has integrated graphics.  Still, you can try setting the fps limit to 30.  If it helps, increase it to 60 and test again.  If it doesn't help, try a new save in Sunset Valley and let me know how it goes.

If you're a mod user in general, it would be beneficial to add (back) NRaas ErrorTrap, Overwatch, and Register while testing.  More mods can come later, and I'd recommend other NRaas mods for general play.  But for testing, ET and OW are mostly all you need, with Register clearing up certain issues that are usually not a major problem but can be intrusive here and there.

Thanks for this, however my settings do not allow me to change the refresh rate?! I have attached a screenshot below -- the bit that says 60Hz doesn't actually let me change it! it also says it doesn't support dynamic refresh rate.

I already play with ErrorTrap / Overwatch / Register (as well as a few other NRaaS mods), and I get constant ET notifications. I dont really know what to do at this point. Every new save / test run always ends up the same!

I do apologise for my lack of tech knowledge. this is all a bit beyond me, and all I want to do is play my game haha!

  • meganbrownhk  You'd need to use an outside tool to limit fps to 30, but you don't have to do that yet if you don't want to.  And you don't need any kind of dynamic refresh rate setting.  This isn't about the refresh rate of your screen; it's about the number of frames the GPU is allowed to generate per second.  The monitor displays the newest frame it's received each time it refreshes (60 times per second, according to your settings), while the GPU renders those frames and passes them on as quickly as it's able to, that is unless you impose a lower cap.

What world are you playing in, and what to the ET notifications say?  It's normal to get one or two on startup, but if you're seeing them regularly in the run of play, something is wrong with your save.

Please also list the other mods you're using.

    Hi there,

thank you for getting back to me. Okay, that makes sense, but seems a bit beyond me!

I have attached a screenshot of the mods I use, and have also attached an example of the script errors I've been getting.

It doesnt seem to be linked to one particular world (I've played in sunset valley, appaloosa plains, bridgeport, and custom worlds!) and it all seems to happen regardless.

  • meganbrownhk  Please remove StoryProgression and all its modules, and the MC Progression module as well.  SP is somewhat heavy, especially with all the extras, to the point where the game engine can't always handle things.  You don't need to save your progress; just see whether this helps.

Separately, try changing the weather.  Bring up the cheats console (ctrl-shift-C) and enter testingcheatsenabled true , then shift-click the ground and select Seasons.  Choose sunny weather and a snow depth level of 0, then see whether the game still crashes.

If these steps don't help, try both at the same time, AND run an MC town reset (City Hall > NRaas > MC > Town Options > Reset Everything) a couple sim-minutes after you load the save.  This will of course send your sims home, as well as everyone else, but that's fine and part of the test.

okay, have given this a go and it seems to have broken the game even further!! I removed the mods you listed above (although i have previously run a test save where i went mod-by-mod to rule any of them out for crashing the game) but now I can't even get far enough to do a town reset or change the weather! I have attached a video of it below 😂

  • meganbrownhk  Sorry for the late reply; I was away from the forums for a couple days.  What you've described is odd, especially since StoryProgression doesn't start running until a couple sim-minutes after the save loads.  But if you want, you can try putting SP back, first just the base module, and doing the other steps.  If that doesn't help, you can temporarily add all the SP modules and try again.

The point of my recommendation is that running that many SP modules on your computer is probably a significant contributor to the issues you're seeing.  Between that and the demands of rendering snow (falling and on the ground), your hardware is probably having a lot of trouble keeping up.  But that doesn't mean you have to take all these steps in the order I wrote them.
