Game freezes when disable roommate service

Recently, I downloaded The Sims 3, along with its expansion and other packages, from the EA App on my 2020 MacBook Pro M1.

The game freezes whenever I try to disable the roommate service through the phone, forcing me to close the game entirely, which results in the loss of any unsaved progress.

Additionally, I noticed that my Sim receives rent payments from a "roommate" that I've never actually seen in the game.

I have not installed any mods. Could anyone provide a solution?

While this issue doesn't impact my overall gameplay, I would prefer not to receive this abnormal income.

@kameng-matthew  Any standard mod, as in, a .package file that goes into Mods > Packages, works equally well with the Mac and Windows versions of Sims 3.  For helpful mods in general, start here:

I would suggest running an NRaas MasterController reset on your world, both for the overall health of your save and to see whether it clears up the roommate service issue and/or allows you to cancel the service over the phone without causing a crash.

For other mods, it would help to know what you're trying to accomplish specifically.  There are a lot of options that work great for one particular purpose but wouldn't necessarily be relevant to your play style.

  • @kameng-matthew  The roommate service is dependent in part on the lot type of the house your sims are living in.  If it's Residential-Apartment, roommates are assigned automatically; to avoid this, you'll want a regular residential lot.

You can't change the lot type while the sims are living on the lot, but you can move them elsewhere, temporarily, and then change it.  The change sometimes doesn't stick when switching between residential types, so change the lot to some kind of community type first, save, quit, reload, and change it back to residential.

  • @puzzlezaddict  Thank you for your kind reply.

I have confirmed that the lot type is set to "General Residential" and not "Apartment." I recall that this issue began after I invited someone to move into my house. I remember I have never enable the roommate service before.

My original intention was to invite someone to move in and become a family member. However, it seems that the Sim was added as a roommate rather than a family member. Later, my Sim married this "roommate," and they became part of the family.

After this "roommate" became a family member, I noticed that a stranger was living in my house. I clicked on that Sim and chose an option similar to "Request Roommate to Leave." After doing so, the roommate left, but I started receiving weekly rental income.

I tried to disable the roommate service through the phone, but as I mentioned in my previous post, the game freezes, and I need to close and restart it. I also tried moving to a new house/lot, but I still receive the weekly rental income and cannot disable the roommate service.

Although the abnormal rental income continues, there haven't been any other crashes. If there's no solution, I believe starting a new game might be the only option.

@kameng-matthew  Does it help if you evict your household to Edit Town first, then place them in a regular residential lot?  You might still need to manually cancel the service, and it might help to use a landline rather than a smartphone.  You don't need to save your progress if you don't like the results.

Other than that, are you willing to add a few mods to try to help?  Let me know either way.

  • I tried it, but it doesn't seem to help, and the problem remains unsolved. However, it doesn't affect my gameplay, so I'll just leave it as is. Thank you for your response. Also, could you let me know where I can download mods for Mac? And, do you have any recommended mods for Mac that you could introduce to me?
