@xixdoxlovexsimsx what programme are you referring to which you say persistently needed an update? Origin?
I would advise manually uninstalling your games - it's important to check that there are no traces of the game left on your laptop. It's probably also causing you issues. You can find instructions here: http://help.ea.com/za/article/manually-uninstalling-the-sims-3/
You need to manually uninstall your expanion packs too. To find instructions for them, type into the google search bar: manually uninstalling the Sims 3 X (X being the name of your game) - go to the help.ea article and follow the steps.
Once you've done that, open Origin which you should have downloaded (if not - http://origin.com/download ) and login. You should then be able to download your base game through the My Games tab. Once you've downloaded and installed the base game, download and install the super patch ( http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Current-Patch-1-67-Manual-links-and-more/td-p/67858 ).
Try running the base game - it should run smoothly and fine. If it doesn't at that stage, please post and let me know.
If it does, continue to download your games. You can find them by right-clicking on the Sims 3 icon in Origin and choosing "view game details" - scroll down and you should see them there.
If the crashes / freezing / lags, continue, let me know and we'll go through some trouble-shooting. 🙂
