How do I move the Sims 3 directory out of the Documents folder on my startup disc and onto another drive?

Hello,

I just installed the Sims 3 on my MacBook Air today. I would like to install custom content for my game, but I have limited room on my startup disc. I tried creating an alias of the Electronic Arts folder on my laptop and moving the original to my external drive, but the game gave me some sort of debugging warning and then wouldn't open. Everything was fine after I moved the folder back onto my laptop.

I haven't seen any solutions for this for Mac, so are there any ideas?
