I usually back up the whole "The Sims 3" folder under Documents. I would create a folder on the desktop and call it something like ts3Document_bkup20110311. Then copy/paste the sims 3 folder inside of it. This way you know by the name of the folder what Sims 3 folder you backed up and when. The items inside the folder (i.e. sims, saved games, etc...) can be re-added or completely deleted later. Personally, I never delete that backup until whatever it is I'm installing is up, running, and fully tested.
