You will need to update your mods. Mods need updating with every patch.
Check what is already updated or compatible and ditch the rest.
I uninstalled the game- removed all the mods and custom content and deleted all the cache files- then when I removed the sims 3 completely from my computer and reinstalled the base game only. When I ran it- it worked well- but as soon as I updated the patch to 1.42 I got a black screen again.

Did you delete the cache files and delete all the user files as well ? They don't get deleted automatically.

Yes I deleted the cache files. The user files (I am assuming these are the previous game files ) I moved to another location and saved under a differnt name. The only thing I did not delete was the download manager in the EA folder of my progam file

Did you also try all the suggestions here ?
If nothing helps, could you post your Computer's DxDiag?
To gather a DxDiag on your computer, please follow the steps below:
If you have Microsoft Windows XP:
1. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
2. Select Run.
3. Type dxdiag in the available text field.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Save All Information.
If you have Windows Vista/Win 7 and do not have a Run selection:
1. Click On Start
2 Type dxdiag into Search Box
3. Click Save All Information.
Either use two posts to post all or only post the part up to [sound device].
Please let me know if you have a switchable graphic card. That usually does not show in the DxDiag.
