The only thing is in edit town mode my house is shown as empty with no sims living in it.
do you have a previous save of that game ? or the back up of it from when you last save you can then rename the backup folder of that saved game and see if the family show up if they do save them via the edit town go to your the sims 3 folder saves find your game whatever you named it make a copy of the backup file for example my sims save is SSV.sims3 the back up SSV.sims3.backup i copy the backup and rename it SSV1.sims3 launch it and if my sims are as they should be i then save the family

Thank you so much for trying to help I really appriciate it! But this is just getting to confusing for me, I'm going to have to make a new game and lose the corrupted one. Thank you again and hopefully this won't happen again.
Make regular backups of your game. Save in circles (<savegamename1>, <savegamename2>,...)
Always make an extra save game before going travelling, going to Uni, going to the future and moving.
I had this simular problem, traveled there, it was odd the person my Sim was dating vanished from here list of known's. When she traveled back to the present, her created bot was was greeving for a lost sim that they witnessed dying. My sim did not appear back, however it showed her as being in the Future still. When I reboot and start the game over, this repeatedly happens, no other outcomes. When I was back in the present, I did notice the other house where the "going steady" sim lived, no longer appeared either. I tried to save my sim in the Future as a pre-made sim, going back into the main menu to see if I can find them there, no such luck :-( I saved before I went into the future, than saved once again (because it was a safe travel) when she was about to travel back, so there she is stuck.
