Sim took a free vacation and never came back + Relationships all gone?

If anyone still has this problem, here is what I did to fix it:

While the parents are still gone on the vacation, change the active household, and play with another family for the duration of the vacation that is left. Then visit the first family to check if the parents are there. After that you just need to change the active household back to the original family.
