@SickkGeeza I tested on my own Mac once when this problem first resurfaced, and again a week later, and then twice more last night and this morning. Every time, I could get past the "problem connecting to the server" message if I did the workaround. So it's not that this doesn't work at all; the question is why it doesn't work on some systems.
@SickkGeeza @imsjourney90 @16tiny @chelss1 There are a few important points about this process, and they all need to be taken into consideration together. The first is that if the game patches after you apply the workaround, the paul.dll file will revert to the original. This is true whether you run the Super Patch manually or let the launcher patch when it offers. The easy solution is to run the Super Patch first and then move around the paul.dll files.

The second point is that the paul.dll from Late Night needs to go into the folder for whichever pack is your newest by the date EA released it. So if you've installed World Adventures, it's not going to help to replace the file in the base game folder. But if your newest pack is not World Adventures or High-End Loft Stuff, you shouldn't need to do anything.
The third point is that the paul.dll file you need to delete and replace is still in the base game contents, not the contents for a given pack. As in, this is the file path:
Contents\Resources\transgaming\c_drive\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin\Packs\[the folder for the base game, or WA, or HELS]
@Elphiemarie2 You should be able to install University Life and patch the game, then launch without having to apply the paul.dll workaround. Installing Late Night will cause an unknown error message, but you can apply these two workarounds to fix it (just for LN not UL):
