@Oliviahuffman Open Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access, search for Sims , and delete any entries with "Sims3" in them. This should clear up the "connecting" issue.
You can use the Sims 3 Store website rather than buying items in-game. This is much more reliable, and I'd recommend using Firefox in particular, which is usually more reliable than Safari or Chrome. Once you buy items, you can download them from the store site and use the launcher to install them without ever needing to sign into the launcher or at the Main Menu.
