Sims 3 crashing in map view

Hello, my operating system is Windows 11 Home 64-bit, and I play on the EA app. Whenever I try to go into map view my game crashes. I installed the sims 3 crash analyzer and it keeps saying insufficient graphics capability. I updated my drivers, card, and computer so everything is up to date but it's still crashing. I use mods and cc so I removed it all and opened the game, and the crashing still occurred. I also have reshade installed. I tried lowering all my graphics to the lowest possible settings, and it didn't immediately crash but after a few minutes, it crashed again. I've done Regul's save cleaner and Acottonsock's ultimate fix, but the crashing is still happening. I do have all the expansion packs installed, and 2 stuff packs. I don't know anything about computers so explain it to me like I'm a five-year-old. Thanks for reading.

  • @bff611  That is a very large save, but the .nhd files look fine; the only real problem is the TravelDB.package.  Did Regul Save Cleaner make any difference?  I don't actually know whether it affects TravelDB, or whether you have a choice about it.  Here are a couple other guides to cleaning saves, in case you want to try to cut down the TravelDB's size:

    https://www.nraas.net/community/How-to-use-S3PE-to-clean-up-your-save-game

But before spending time on that, I'd suggest trying a new save in Saffron Bay to make sure the world is still running properly.  And see whether an NRaas MasterController town reset helps.  The command is NRaas > MC > Town Options > Reset Everything, and it can be run from an in-game computer.  I would suggest putting back ErrorTrap and Overwatch as well, or adding them if you haven't before.

If that doesn't help, what season is it in-game, and what's the weather like?  Changing the weather, for example from rain or snow to a sunny say, might help.  To do so, open the cheats console and enter testingcheatsenabled true , then shift-click the ground somewhere to see various options.  Changing the season on the fly will have unintended consequences, so I'd only suggest it as an experiment, not a solution; changing the weather itself should be fine.

  • @bff611  The crash log analyzer is often inaccurate or overly general, as you can guess from its current conclusion.  Your graphics card is more than capable of running Sims 3 on ultra settings, but the game engine itself has some limitations that might be coming into play here.

First of all, have you manually limited your in-game framerates?  This is a critical step in getting Sims 3 to run well on high-end systems.  The Nvidia Control Panel settings may be sufficient here, which would mean you don't need to install a third-party program, so let's start with that.  Right-click your desktop and select the Control Panel, then Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings and find ts3.exe (without the W) on the list.  Scroll down to Max Frame Rate and set it to 165, the refresh rate of your laptop screen.  Scroll down to Vertical Sync and set it to Adaptive, then set Triple Buffering to On.

Open Sims 3 and confirm that the fps limit is being honored.  Bring up the cheats console (ctrl-shift-C) and enter "fps on" without quotes, and you'll see a number in the upper-right corner of the screen.  This should never exceed the 165 fps limit you've set in the Control Panel; please let me know either way.

Additionally, please either play in windowed mode or in fullscreen mode but matching the current resolution your screen is using, which is 1680x1050.  Playing in fullscreen with a resolution that has a different aspect ratio than your monitor can cause stuttering and other graphical issues.

As a side note, is there a particular reason you're running your screen at 1680x1050 rather than its much higher native resolution?  If the icons and text are too small at 2560x1600, you could increase the system DPI scaling instead, which would allow you to benefit from the higher resolution.  Let me know either way and if you'd like help changing the DPI setting.

Please test the game in a clean user folder.  Move the existing Sims 3 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you open the launcher, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but not read by the game, which is the point at the moment.  It's best to start with no added content at all and only reintroduce mods and the like once the game is stable.

If Sims 3 crashes again, please remove Reshade entirely and repair the game: open the EA App game library, click Sims 3, and select Manage > Repair.  This will undo any changes you've made to the program files, including those in the guide you've followed.  This is exactly the point of repairing: if restoring the user files to default doesn't help, the next step is restoring the game to default too.  Please don't make any changes after repairing; just test the game again and let me know how it goes.

@puzzlezaddict I changed my max frame rate to 165 and vertical sync and triple buffering were already on so I kept it like that, and I checked it in game and it never exceeded the fps limit which was good. I tried going into map view and it crashed. I changed my screen to the native resolution, before I had it at a different resolution because the icons are text are really small. I would love help changing the DPI setting! I tested it in a clean user file and it didn't crash. So I moved just the save I was playing in before and downloaded the Saffron Bay sims 3 pack which is the custom world I'm playing in into the clean user file, and it crashed again in map view. So it seems like it might be the save itself. The save file is 686 MB, I'm on the 2nd generation and I've never moved worlds. I've traveled to all 3 of the destination worlds.

@puzzlezaddict Regul save cleaner did make a big difference, before it was 878 MB and it brought it down to 686 MB. Using the guides you sent me I brought my save file down to 211 MB! I opened map view and it didn't crash! So it looks like it was the save file size. Thank you so much, I didn't realize my save file was so large and changing my fps limit to165 will probably make a big difference as well. Oh and I tried a new save and the actual world is running fine.
