Could you both check if your video card is properly recognized by the game: http://sims3.crinrict.com/en/2013/06/getting-the-game-to-recognize-your-card.html
Also make sure that you have the newest drivers.
Also try resetting all your Sims in your town with the cheat resetsim *.
You might have a stuck Sim somewhere

How can I check for the latest drivers? Game recognises my graphics card so I'm fine in that regard- I will reset the sims shortly but surely that won't affect the fact it's slow to load up?
Kind regards

Slow at load up is mostly caused by lots of extra content.
Might have also something to do with this: http://sims3.crinrict.com/en/2013/06/black-screen-long-loading-times-and-tmp-files-in-dccache.html
