The Sims 3 error code 289

I updated my game yesterday for the first time since I have had the Sims 3 installed (I only had internet to do it yesterday). I have the base pack and world adventures installed. It updated with the  new super patch 1.38. However, my launcher doesn't let me open the game. The launcher opens and then says "error code 289 - check the log" and then closes again. So then I tried to open the game without the launcher through the Sims 3 folder, it still says "error code 289". I spent all the internet data that I had for the month to update my game and if I do a system restore now or reinstall the sims games i'll lose all the updates I did and the game still might not work. What error code is this? I don't have internet to just try and install the updates over and over again. Please help me!!! 

The main reason i updated the game was to be able to use the create a world tool, but now I can't even just play sims, nevermind create a world!!! Help!!!

  • I'm doing some research on that atm. Seen it before, don't know what it's about.

    In the meantime, could you check if there's a file called TS3_1.38.151.0180xx_update.exe or http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/TS3_1.38.151.0180xx_update.ex_ anywhere on your computer ? If you do, that's the patch so you won't need to worry about having to re-download the patch at all.

    For next time, I would download the manual patch instead of the one through the launcher. This way you can save the patch to a safe location and don't need to worry about your internet allowance.

    EDIT: Can't seem to find anything useful on this error.

    Could you post a screen shot of the error ? Did you update WA as well or just the base game ? Do you have both games as disk versions and do you have any other EP/SPs ? Are you using custom content or mods ?

    Thanks for answering so quickly. I could not find either of those file names anywhere on my computer - quite disappointing. How would I download the manual patch and would I only have to download the one patch? Sorry you couldn't find anything useful. I'm not sure if it updated WA adventures as well, I simply just said update game in the launcher and ticked the 1.38 patch. I tried posting a screen shot of the error , but i was unable to, do you perhaps have an email adress which I could send it to? I have both games as disk versions and do not have any other EP's/Sp's. I also am not using any custom content. 

    It's very strange to me that the launcher says it is version 1.38.151.018002, but I am unable to find the patch anywhere on my computer.

    I don't know if the launcher deletes the file after it's done.

    If you need to reinstall the game, get the super patch but it's 1.1 GB big in size.

    Screenshots might help me determine whether it is a game message or if something is going on with your Windows system. Best thing to do is upload the screenshots to some file sharing sites like imageshack or photobucket and post the links here.

    Don't know if you're still reading but I was consulting with someone on this error and here's a bunch of questions that might help find a solution to this issue

    I c/p the questions so the pronoun is off, sorry about that.

    • if they visit thesims3.com immediately when they get this error, can they load the page? Can they login?
    • can they attach their error log that is referenced in the error msg? So we can take a look? I believe it is "Sims3LauncherLogFile.log" in the User documents folder.
    • Since they still get the error if they bypass Launcher to play the game, have they done DEP on ts3w.exe? If they have not bypassed Launcher to start the game, we need to ask them to do so.
    • If they need to install Sims3Packs, does this error happen again when Origin is updated? Or Origin no longer installed? If it is still installed, is it set to start automatically and log you in automatically? They empty their Downloads folder except for the one item they want to install? If there's more than one, just pick one to test with.
    • Are they online via Launcher, Origin, or the game the last time they Quit either or all of these programs?
    • Do they still get the error on clean User Folders?
    • Do they still get the error if they disable their Internet?
    • We need to find the common denominator for those getting this error:
      PC or Mac? What OS version?
      What Firewall?
      What Antivirus?
      What is running in the background at the time of starting Launcher?
      What region, DVD or Digital version?
      Patched to 1.38 via Launcher or manual? If manual, incremental or Superpatcher? If Incremental, from what version previous?
      What combos of EPs + SPs? Are all of them registered with thesims3.com, if not all, which are the registered ones?
      Do they have CAW, CAP (Create-A-Pattern), CrAP (Create-A-Pet) installed?
      Where are they located? If not willing to disclose State, Country; or Country; just Continent is fine.
  • I tried to play my sims 3 game yesterday and had the same problem its really frustrating because I wanted to play the sims 3 and buy the new seasons game coming out I have tried everything to try and get it working again, I've even restored my laptop all the way back to Feb! I just want to play sims 3 why oh why are you so evil to me laptop! ☹️ if anyone finds a solution I would love it to be simple when explaned as I'm not good with computers!
