Unable to save

Yesterday while playing I had been playing for quite a while so I thought I'd better save but when I clicked save, nothing happened, the game just kept playing, I couldn't go into edit town, save and quit, buy or build mode, plan outfit at dresser, nothing worked. I then thought it might be something to do with being online so I went to log off but the button was greyed out and it sayed 'unable to log off as the servers are busy try again later'. In the end I just went into task manager and had to quit without saving. Also my game froze twice since the update so I deleted my cache files and that seemed to solve that problem. I have never used custom content or mods, but I did install Grim's Ghastley Mansion from the store so thought maybe it was a problem with that. I have no option to set holiday lights on the door, are you supposed to get this option on a community lot or just when you place the door on a residential lot? I saw everyone had it in there video reviews but thought maybe it's because they had a mod installed.
