For the moment, the mod is the best option. If you run into issues, the creator is always helps and if you backup your games before putting the mods in, not much can go wrong-
For some the method withdeleting the Uni file works but the corruption is still there and can cause further issues. EA desperatly needs to fix this but there won't be a patch before July. I really do hope they do something about the severe Uni issues or else they'll probably loose more customers.
As for the inviting, the problem are the SIms that live at uni as well, your friends and not the Sims from your hometown. The inviting has other issues as well, so I would go with not inviting anyone. It's not that exciting anyways and some times they don't even show up.
Ok. Before you mentioned a mod the other day I had no idea what it was. How do I go about getting them? Do they cost money?

Can't really talk about those here. They are third party content and you use at your own risk (I do too). They don't cost money.
Just google NRaas and/or Twallan.
