Apocalypse Challenge Discussion Thread

I've been playing the Apocalypse challenge by @Pinstar1161 for a few weeks now. I haven't seen anyone talking about it but I'm sure I'm not the only one playing it. Please feel free to use this thread to ask questions, discuss strategy, and share your stories. See Pinstar's thread, The Sims 4 Apocalypse Challenge Official Rules, for links to the challenge rules and a Getting Started video. It was difficult keeping track of all the restrictions at first but I got used to them pretty quickly.

I scouted the neighborhoods before I started the challenge by using one of my existing saves. I wanted to be sure that the neighborhood I chose had somewhere to fish and I also wanted to find the neighborhood that would help me the most. I chose Hallow Slough in Willow Creek. It has 3 fishing spots, 2 grills, 2 chess tables, a jungle gym, and a public restroom in the neighborhood. I also considered the community lot strips in both neighborhoods but I decided I didn't want to bulldoze any of the community lots.

I downloaded my founder from the gallery using the #wonderchild tag, as recommended by Pinstar. I chose Aidan Ellsworth by @DeviousKiwi. I found him a new job as a Tech Guru right after he moved in because I wanted to unlock the eSport Gamer restrictions first. He started at level 4 because he has the Connections reward, along with many others. I built a very simple house, just an 8x8 square with no interior walls. I made it a 3-story house right away with stairs going all the way to the roof and put a rocket on the roof since I wasn't sure I'd be able to afford one later. The first floor does have 2 tiles left outside the walls to provide room for the mailbox and a trash can. I also gave him a double bed, a sink, a 1-tile dining table with 4 chairs, and a bookcase. I put a computer on the table and a portable lamp (from Outdoor Retreat) on the bookcase.

Once the house was finished, I sent Aidan fishing so he would have something to cook. It took him awhile to catch his first fish because he didn't have any fishing skill, so starting right away was probably a good idea. After that, he used the grill at the neighborhood park to make Fried Fish and then started meeting people and making friends. I wanted to get him a wife pretty quickly but he didn't have enough time left before people started leaving.

I had already decided that I wanted him to marry Liberty Lee because she's a level 2 Astronaut and I wanted to use that rocket on his roof. She was there the first day but she didn't show up again until the next weekend, probably because of her work hours. Her roommate, Summer Holiday, did visit the neighborhood almost every day so Aidan made friends with Summer, asked her to move in on the first Saturday, then used the Merge or Split Households screen to move Liberty in instead. That was faster and easier than trying to rush a friendship with Liberty.

I don't want this to get too long, so I'll continue the story later.

  • Lyla and Darryl got married and had a son named Robert. Lyla is now an Elder. She has reached level 10 in the Baking skill, making her a master of all the cooking skills. Darryl is an Adult with 13 days until he ages up. He has reached level 8 of the Secret Agent career and chose the Diamond Agent branch at his last promotion, which makes him a Spy Captain. He has reached level 10 in both the skills needed for that branch, Logic and Charisma. I expect him to complete the career without any difficulty. I've been using the Take Risks work option instead of Work Hard and getting good results from it.

Anna and Zach are now Young Adults with 6 days until they age up. Anna and Zach both finished high school with A's and they both got the Cheerful trait when they became Young Adults. Anna is also in the Secret Agent career and I plan for her to become a Villain. She is currently a Lead Detective (level 5) with Charisma skill 6, Logic 9, and Mischief 5. She'll need one more skill point in Logic and Mischief to reach the top of the Villain branch. Zach is a Solid Storyteller (Entertainer/Comedian level 6). He has Comedy level 9 and Charisma level 5. He'll need to reach level 10 in Comedy and level 8 in Charisma to reach the top of the Comedian branch.

Robert is already a Teen although he just grew up (12 days remaining). He got the Social Butterfly aspiration and Art Lover trait when he became a Child. He got the Soulmate aspiration and Active trait as a Teen. He completed his childhood aspiration easily, earned an A in elementary school, and reached level 10 in the Charisma skill. I'm planning for him to become an Investor in the Business career, so I concentrated on that skill instead of the other Child skills. Now that he's a Teen, I'll be concentrating on his Logic skill and hope to reach level 10 before he grows up again.

I've been spending a lot of time learning Charisma skill for these Sims and I've discovered that most Friendly interactions do not build the Charisma skill. By keeping a close eye on the percentage shown on the skill bar, I've determined that Brighten Day, Compliment Outfit, Express Admiration, Flatter, Get to Know, Heartfelt Compliment, and Hug build the skill. There might be a few others on the Friendly menu, such as Express Love and Kiss Cheek, but I've only noticed those two recently and haven't been able to test them yet. You can also build Charisma skill with some of the Romantic interactions but I haven't tested those at all. That might help you if you're trying to learn the Charisma skill without books or mirrors, the way I've had to.
  • Darryl finished the Diamond Agent career. I stopped using Take Risks after I noticed that a bad result would lower work performance right at the end of the day and lost at least one promotion because of that. Darryl is due to age up to Elder in 1 day. His wife Lyla is still alive but her lifespan bar has been full for several days now, so she could die of old age at any time.

Anna and Zach are both Adults and have 15 days until they age up. They have both reached level 8 in their careers, so Anna is a Double Agent (Villain career) and Zach is a Roast Master (Comedian career). They have already met the skill requirements to reach the top level of their careers.

Robert is still a Teen but he has 0 days until he ages up, so he'll be a Young Adult pretty soon. I'm still planning to make him an Investor and he's been working on the skills needed for that. He has level 10 Charisma and level 8 Logic, so he'll just need a couple more skill points in Logic.

Everything has been going pretty much the way I had planned, except I forgot about Anna and Zach's last birthday so they both grew up without birthday cakes.
  • Robert aged up to Young Adult and got a job in Business. I had him filling out reports for his daily task while I was watching Anna and Lila talk to each other when I heard an unusual sound. After a few seconds I decided I'd better have a look around to see what was happening and found Robert out front, getting abducted by the aliens, with his reports only halfway finished. I saved shortly after he returned and quit for the night, so I don't know if he's pregnant.
  • Took a long break. Darryl is still alive but Lyla died of old age. Zach has now finished the Comedian career, which means I can now add more than one Sim per generation to the household, my Sims can throw parties and go on dates, they can invite other Sims to the lot, and they can use mirrors. Anna has reached level 9 in the Villain career but still needs two promotions to complete the career, it's the only career with 11 levels. Robert is at level 5 of the Business career.

I've added another Sim to the household. Her name is Lillian Mahan and she's a Wonder Child by DeviousKiwi. She joined the Tech Guru career and has reached level 6. She'll be choosing the Startup branch at her next promotion. I've started a romance between her and Robert.

Recap: I have completed the eSport Gamer, Space Ranger, Oracle, Management, Chef, Diamond Agent, and Comedian careers. The first generation was Aidan Ellsworth and Liberty Lee. The second generation was Isaiah Ellsworth and Summer Holiday. The third generation is Darryl, Anna, and Zach Ellsworth and Lyla Knight. The fourth generation is Robert Ellsworth and Lillian Mahan. I've lost track of how much time has passed.
  • I'm playing this, too! It's insane how hard it is. :D It's just what I needed!

I thought I would have a lot more trouble remembering all the restrictions, but I think I'm doing really well. It helps that there are like only four forbidden actions that Sims do autonomously: drink water from the tap, grill non-fish items, have quick meals (which isn't a problem right now because we don't have a refrigerator yet), and use the computer for non-work-related activities. But because it's hard to keep an eye on these actions, I have autonomy turned off. It gets boring, but it's not too bad.

I had my founder, Lilliana Kelley by abroughton1005, marry Johnny Zest, who I had quit his job and join the Tech Guru career. Now he's at eSport Gamer 7, while Lilliana is at Chef 8. I decided to get most of the restrictions involving autonomous actions out of the way first, with a couple of others. I've had Lilliana catching and grilling fish since the day began, with harvested sage and strawberries to feed her growing family when there's no time for her to fish and cook, or if it's Monday after the bills and the local mob have been paid. o:)

Right now, Lillian and Johnny are the proud parents of three children: Beejey, who is a Child and who I'm grooming to take over the Business - Management career (because I do NOT want that "Sims must quit any job if they're late or come home early" restriction hanging over my head for any longer than necessary), and Toddler twins named Marina and Heidi, who will take over the Mixologist and Fast Food careers. I don't know what the next generation will do--possibly Journalist (for hygiene) and Secret Agent - Villain (because I'm running out of space to place everything, and because of where I placed things on my first floor, there's no room for stairs, and I'm REALLY going to need to spread out soon!).

I honestly thought I would want to lift the hygiene restriction first, but then I discovered that washing your hands about five times, even at the lowest level sink without an upgrade, will raise hygiene considerably. Unfortunately, the only way to bathe toddlers is with a bathtub, which I can't have, so the toddlers are going to be stinky after a few days and there's nothing I can do about that for a few generations. Fortunately, they only get taken away if you starve them. I'm so glad they can eat food off the floor!
  • Hi. I'm new to the Sims 4 Apocalypse challenge (and the Sims 4 in general). I stuck with Sims 3 for a long time! I'm also playing on console, if this matters.

I've finished the tutorial and have kept playing my tutorial Sim for a few more game weeks, but I'm itching to start another Apocalypse.

    My first two questions are:

    1) What's the best way to get a good founder on console version?
    2) Could someone give me a better idea of starting an apocalypse than I have right now? I start on an empty lot, but with how much in funds? Wouldn't a good founder have way more funds than a CAS? I know I have to give up all funds as soon as the bills are due, but could I theoretically start with really high funds and build a good apocalypse house right away?

    Other questions:

    3) Any restrictions on nannies? I see no maids out of the gate, but what about nannies, repairmen and gardeners?
    4) One stack of objects in personal inventory? Does this mean if I have a carp in my inventory, I can't get a goldfish? Or does this mean that I can't have more than one stack of each type of fish?
