- crocobaura4 years agoLegendThey should add Chinese new year holiday activities so we could add the holiday to calendar. I would also like a dragon dance and a working teaset. I would love a sand/stone garden.

Okay. So - do you want Japanese martial arts? Chinese? Korean?
To say nothing of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, etc.
Because honestly, just saying "Oriental" and diminishing it to karate and Chinese food is borderline racist.
T'ai Chi is, in origin, a Chinese, Buddhist/Taoist discipline. Karate is from Ryukyu, a Pacific island culture under Imperial Chinese rule at the time the art was developed, influenced by White Crane Kung Fu.
Zen gardens are, specifically, Japanese.
Lunar New Year is celebrated - with regional variations - across several nations and cultures.
Just among China, Japan, and Korea, you have very strongly held cultural differences, sympathies, and antipathies, not to mention an awful lot of people who play video games.
Reducing all that to "Asian" or, heaven help us "Oriental" martial arts, celebrations and menu items is problematic.
This kind of content may just be exotic flavor to you, but it's either handled with extreme sensitivity, or will be tokenistic, culturally appropriative and offensive to some or all of the above groups.
Well, EA didn't have issues to reduce all the Central America elements as "Jungle" Adventure. - EA_Cade4 years ago

Hiya @Mak27 ,
As you can see, I've edited your thread title. To echo Sindocat's sentiment and for your own knowledge the term "oriental" is considered to be demeaning at best by many with Asian heritage, please do not use it.
Rather than remove this post, I'm seeing this as an opportunity to educate you on something you may not have known anything about :) - Babykittyjade4 years agoSeasoned AceI walk on egg shells when I talk about anything regarding cultures or race. We live in very sensitive times and things that were not considered offensive before are offensive now. That is the very reason I don't like bringing real cultures into the sims. It has to be very basic, simple and careful just to keep people from going into an outrage.
But I want risky adventures.
That said since this is the route we are going I would love to have a pack inspired by any one of the Asian countries. They all have something different, unique and beautiful. I've always wanted cambodian/thai most of all.
Though I don't know why "South Asia" is always forgotten ??? - Mk_27904 years agoSeasoned Novice

I think using "jungle" to represent central american heritage and culture is also demeaning. This is how EA looks at third world countries culture? as an stereotype? - LiELF4 years agoLegend

Yes!! Cambodian inspired would be amazing! I especially love the old temples, forests and unique architecture! <3 It's a place I would just love to visit, it seems so mystical. - JanuaryGarnet084 years agoSeasoned Ace

We did get some Chinese New Year items in a base game update a couple of years ago and there are traditions on the calendar if you have Seasons that are similar to those of Chinese New Year observations and then if you added it during the Spice Festival in San Myshuno which is easy to do now that they have added the festivals to the calendar you could take your sims there in the evening and create a pretty decent and enjoyable simulation of the holiday for your sims. It won’t be identical to real life, but that’s not really the point of the game either. - JanuaryGarnet084 years agoSeasoned Ace@LeGardePourpre those photos are stunning.

Instead of China, Japan and South Korea, it would be interesting to explore Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.
I like the aesthetics of temples, but once you've seen one temple you've seen them all and I'd rather they don't add any more specific cultures but without essential cultural elements, like they did with Japan, for fear of causing offence. No tea ceremony, no bowing at shrines, no incense burning. I'd like to see motorbikes and orchid shows, jewelry, new fruits and vegetables and more variety of vegetarian recipes, fruit cocktails, scuba diving and large boats for 8 sims to travel from one island to another.
