Collecting in Sims 4 has little sense and purpose

I realized recently that sims 4 is very limited in the usefulness of collecting almost anything. There is no way to track collections like in sims 3 world adventures. Bugs in outdoor escape, frogs and some crystals are used in making potions or herbalism, but that is it. Inventories are very messy so keeping anything there is equivalent to hoarding. Plants are useful in making meals etc, (would be nice there was a grocery store a player could make to actually have them sold, not just poof out of inventory which is not game play), but there is no use for shells, Sulani collectables, winter escape, pets and many other collectibles in the game. In sims 3 sims could make jewelry, clothing etc. Sims 2 game play was even more expanded in that regard. Also in large part because of open for business expansion and others. Sims 4 has few animation when it comes to exploration, ( you for example can’t see under water like in sims 3, now your sim just vanishes and you get a text message (what exciting game play is that. Nothing more exciting then a rabbit hole) and even jungles have more text exploration then animation and player engagement). This game is deficient in the way it interacts with neighborhood, actual self guided exploration and when you do collect things they are only good for selling and getting rid of. No achievements for completing collections, no way to track them and no purpose to collectibles themselves. Basically this game lacks engagement. Going on adventure with your dog equals reading way to long text about your sim having fun ( at least one of us did), jungle adventure is better since you get to unlock areas of the map (that’s cool), but once again too many rabbit holes where I stare at a screen. So the few things I get to see my sim find are basically only good for selling and enabling an emotional aura which is the worse idea ever. This game’s emotional system is atrocious so having rocks or feathers or what ever nonsense item influence the emotions of an already emotionally unstable sim and have every single sim in the dame react exact same way, making them more robotic and emotional clones that over write traits. (Making Unflirty sim, flirty for example) there are few traits and far between, having items over write the few we as players got is sad and boring. So to kill two birds with one stone perhaps it might be a thought to 1. Allow for more self guided exploration, more neighborhood option for finding collectibles, and animation as well as game play instead of boring text. This is a game not a book. I don’t want to read essays, I want to see my sim do things. 2. Have a way to track collectible items in perhaps a book of collectibles 3. Provide meaningful interactions with other sim about the collectibles (but perhaps only if you complete a collection etc providing a bit of challenge to unlock those features) 4. Once you have a way to track collectibles, perhaps making them count for something would be a nice addition to the game: a) maybe earning a trait for specific collections, those traits in turn should also impact interactions animations and game play, b) provide a better way to display collections or valuable items, and not have them impact emotions which is more annoying then fun (it makes all sims into clones and erases the slither of individuality we are given in our sims.), more displays, different ways to show them in sims homes etc c) make collectibles count! Make them more useful. Only a few have some purpose (the crown/ helmet was one way although I never use it because I don’t want my sim walking around with that thing on their head and once again I don’t want anything influencing emotions that overwrite the minuscule level of diversity). Have sim use them in making other items, selling them in actual game play (as opposed to poofing out of inventory or disappearing through ether after using the computer or even ploppsy, which is also extremely limited in actual game play. In a nutshell I am saying add animation, interactions, items, organization which equals actual game play. Also would be nice to turn screen shots into photos you can put in a frame I. A sims home. I know you can have a sim take a photo but it’s never as good and always on the wrong angle since you have little control over it. I’m just saying I’d like those screenshots like collectibles to have more use. Some people say you can, but it’s way to complicate and to me destroys immersion of the game.

PS: on a side note. Love Sulani. It’s beautiful. But, I feel it really missed in the potential it could offer. I love that my sim can swim in the ocean, but there is so little they can do there. Nothing really they can do together (someone will say you can snorkel together. My question is. Do they really snorkel together? It looks like you just send two sims to do the same activity but they just do it separate). It would be nice if they can take romantic walks on the beach, windsurf, surf, kayak, explore other islands (that should have unlocked). Explore under water (hint at a potential for game pack lol). There are so many unexplored possibilities. They can build sand sculptures which is cool but no different then buildings snowman in winter. Also, they can have a fire pit, which you have in outdoor escapes. And once again the creators took the fire dance and just transitioned it to snowy escape so they didn’t have to create another activity. Many of what I mentioned was available in previous sim games. I’m just saying this game is lacking sims individuality, animation, interaction and in turn game play. Build team you are great!
  • We can track collections on the phone to see if we completed them. Wish there were some nice displays to show them off. I like the feathers most, they make nice pictures when placed on the wall, and I read that when collected all they can be mounted into a bird thing. Have never collected them all though. :) Would have liked a nice display for the cut gems to show them off, or maybe use them to create a mosaic table or something. Same with the shells, they are nice but not much to do with them apart from the blow conch. In reality shells could be used in all kinds of craft, from jewelry pieces to decorations like keepsake boxes, picture frames, shell curtains, etc. I would like some nice table or drawers with mother of pearl inlays for example. Same, insects could be displayed in those insect display boxes.
  • there is collections button in sims inventory that shows all collectibles that at some point have been in your inventory/ have been discovered and they are also categorized by collection

I do feel we lack reasonable displays for collection rooms though because i keep having to invent my own with moo and stacked tables

and for storage i usually use boxes that came with eco or icya chest that came with university

(id use other prettier chests but the box and icya things are only ones with separated inventories which is sad but oh well)

you can also size those down to mini size so you just have small box full of stuff

+ you can label them so you know what collectables are in what box

even better you can then put those boxes to household inventory or sims inventory and tada collectibles neatly put away until you need them

as for usefulness of these items well i guess its mostly useless but fun looking items but i don't mind

in fact idk what kind of personality traits having lots of rocks should even give you in first place but :/

i guess i would love to make jewellery and such out of collectibles though that sounds cute

  • I just had a thought the other day about how cool it would be if you could use the elements to make jewelry. What they could do is introduce some sort of metalworking skill where you can use the elements. I love that there's a woodworking table, but I feel like the objects you can make is limited. If you could use that in combo with collectibles, you could make all kinds of things. This would be so fun for off-the-grid play, and more period piece/historical stuff. I play some of my saves with lots of collecting of things and it would be nice to have a real reason to use them aside from just selling them or saving them for display. It'd also be sweet if we could make things like flower crowns/necklaces/bracelets from the harvested flowers.

I don't really like how all of the elements when assessed provide the Focus moodlet (at least I think they do, I rarely have them assessed). It'd be more interesting if they offered different kinds of moodlets. As it stands, if I even wanted to have one for the sake of harnessing a moodlet, I would only actually need a small handful of them, depending on where I was placing them. There's no benefit to collecting many of them if you want to use them for the moodlet is what I'm trying to say.

Also, I thought there was a screen to view all of the collectibles so that you could keep track.

From what I see you can only track fishing and gardening. Which I consider more skill building then pure collections. I’d like to be able to track all the finds. Like shells, photographs collections like in sims 3. It was just easier and gave me something to complete. Displays are very lacking. Adding some would be nice and like you mentioned having the ability to make things out of the collectibles and sell them in a store not poof out of inventory or through a computer. Yes you have retail, but it’s very limited and once again displays for stores are limited and there isn’t enough of space to build stores. If they would add perhaps space leasing in a commercial building and added displays and interactions that would be great. I personally hate emotional influence of items because the emotional system makes sims very clone like. You can display insects and even make flower arrangements, but both are nearly identical in appearance. All insect cases look the same, all flower arrangements look almost the same. It would have been better to have less of them but diversify in the way they look. I can collect a large amount of bugs but the bug cases can’t be displayed in a meaningful way. They are bulky and take up lots of space. If they would create a display to stack them in big terrariums that would be cool. Bugs are not a big issue since they can be used in herbalist. I just wish you can collect them outside of outdoor retreat. But gems, shells, world specific and photos need collection sets that could provide game play and be better used in build and cas.

Also collections should be a challenge and provides potential for game play and other rewards. Like earning a trait that allows sims to do other things from animation to interactive stand point. For example when you complete the strangeville aspiration you get a reward in a trait which allows you to talk about the adventure, but unfortunately the creators ended there. The telling has no impact on anything because other sims do not care one bit. What my big point is add all those things but also complete the loop to make it impactful. Not just half ass it.
