Gameplay Suggestion: Transparent Nutrition & Improved Fitness System

I've been diving deep into the culinary and fitness aspects of the game lately, and I've run into a recurring issue that I think many of you might relate to. I love the detail in the cooking system, but the link between food and a Sim's physique feels opaque and sometimes unfair. I wanted to share my thoughts on how we could improve it.

The Core Idea: I would love to see a calorie count or a simple "nutritional info" tooltip when we hover over food items (in the fridge, on a plate, etc.). This would give players the information needed to manage their Sims' weight more intentionally, rather than Sims gaining weight seemingly at random, even when eating healthy-looking foods.

What works well right now?

I genuinely enjoy the variety of foods available and the skill-based progression of the cooking skill. It's fun to have your Sim start out burning pancakes and eventually become a master chef creating gourmet meals. The fitness system, with the Athletic skill and different workout options on objects like the treadmill or yoga mat, is a great foundation. It's satisfying to see a Sim's body visibly change as they commit to a regular workout routine.

What isn’t working or feels frustrating?

The most frustrating part is the complete lack of transparency about what different foods do. A Garden Salad seems like a healthy choice, but does it have the same impact on a Sim's weight as a slice of cake? We have no way of knowing. This leads to the common complaint that "Sims get fat for no reason."

It feels like a hidden, behind-the-scenes calculation is punishing players for simply feeding their Sims, even with high-quality, home-cooked meals. This is especially annoying in scenarios like:

  • Family Gameplay: Trying to manage the diets of multiple Sims at once becomes a guessing game.
  • Careers: A busy Sim in a demanding career (like Doctor or Detective) who relies on quick meals is unfairly penalized with weight gain.
  • Needs/Motives: You're forced to choose between letting your Sim's Hunger motive drop low or feeding them a meal that might have unintended consequences.

What new ideas or improvements would you suggest?

  1. Nutritional Information Tooltips: This is the key one. When you hover over any food item, a small tooltip should appear showing its approximate calorie count (e.g., "Low," "Medium," "High") or even a specific number. This would apply to everything from a quick snack to a grand meal.
  2. Link Activity to Food Intake: The "Calories Burned" from exercise should be more clearly tied to the "Calories Consumed." A Sim who spends 3 hours on the treadmill should be able to afford a more calorie-dense meal without gaining weight.
  3. Fix the leftover system: Sims grabbing a healthy meal as a leftover, such as a salad, shouldn't experience the same weight gain as a sim grabbing a quick meal.

Examples of how this could work:

  • Objects/Activities: A slice of Greasy Pizza from a food stall would have a "Very High" calorie tag, while a Fresh Fruit Salad would be "Low."
  • Social Interactions: "Share a Healthy Meal" could be a new social interaction that provides a positive moodlet.
  • Occult Sims: Perhaps Vampires could have a different metabolic system altogether, where only plasma has a "caloric" effect.

Why would this improve your gameplay experience?

This change would shift weight management from a frustrating, random-seeming event to a strategic and engaging part of gameplay. It would give players agency and control.

Instead of reacting to weight gain after it happens, we could be proactive. We could plan a fitness regimen for a bodybuilder Sim that includes a high calorie diet or manage the diet of an elderly Sim to keep them healthy. It would add a layer of realism that enhances role-playing without being overly complicated. For players who don't enjoy this aspect, they could simply ignore the tooltips, but for those of us who want that level of detail, it would be an invaluable addition.

Does this resonate with anyone else? How do you all currently manage your Sims' weight?

  • From what I've noticed in my game, if sims eat anything while the hunger need is in the green, they will gain weight. With the exception of the fresh fruits and vegetables, all foods will bring their hunger need bar fully in the green if they eat the entire meal. So, if you want them to not gain weight, they should not eat while hunger bar is still green, or maybe eat only half the meal or a fruit or vegetable if hunger bar is green but only half full.

  • I posted this elsewhere:

I wish more foods are added to healthy beyond salad and what a few other dishes? I also wish the caloric calculation of food and hunger regeneration was adjusted (example most fish/egg dishes should have half the calories for more accurate simtheory). From what I have heard some newer/pack foods aren't set/assigned like base game calculations. And the fact that you have to workout like a mad man/woman just to maintain your Sims weight is IMHO triggering (I use a mod to turn this off).

But I think what needs to be done is that food shouldn't be treated like it was in the 80s/90s since many foods back then have been since been debunked as "bad/fatty" foods. Sims caloric numbers look a lot like those out of date diet guidelines. This can be triggering both ways healthy/good and fatty/bad for people. Healthy (Health Food Nut) can just be non-processed and no added sugar foods.

    And I posted this:

After much investigation about how it is too easy to get some lifestyles and too hard to get or maintain other lifestyles: [Lifestyle] "Hungry for Love" an Explanation | EA Forums - 12388013 I figured I'd make a request for improvements as devs are looking into top bugs and feedback recently.

So please improve this feature and expand as, I feel a Sim loses some lifestyles too easy, and won't self maintain it after all the effort of earning it, and the easy/default lifestyles overpower. I really want this feature to work better, and have more lifestyles.

Maybe Health Nut/Junk Food Fiend should be split to more appropriate eating habits:

    • Vegetarian (works with vegetarian trait)
    • Pescetarian (primarily eats fish and vegetarian dishes)
    • Sweet Tooth (primarily eats sweets/desserts)
    • Just Add Bacon (primarily eats deep fried based foods or food with bacon added)
    • Connoisseur (works with foodie trait, eats primarily entrees)

Basically, I don't want to play watch weight game in the game because I already do IRL. But I like the idea of more meal/food realism in game to unique eating habits for each Sim.
