More white skin please...

Since the updates that have changed and added more dark skintones there are so few fair ones, and out of them even fewer are "normal" looking caucasian skin tones, the others are unnatural looking or asian (nothing wrong with asian).

Can we please have some more light/ fair skin tones (with pink and peach undertones - but more yellow undertones skins for asian sims would be nice too, some variation) so not all generated townies are dark?

Almost all premade sims that come in the packs after the update are dark skin (nothing wrong with that), but it highlight the huge difference in choice between the amount of dark skintones and light ones.
The few caucasian premade sims that come with newer packs are basically all the same skintone, but all dark ones have variety.

I only get black, middle eastern, indian, latin, south-east asian etc looking sims generated, with a couple of asian skintoned sims thrown in there. Out of 100 generated sims, I might get a caucasian sim, but most likely not even then, because they will have the asian eyes and/ or the yellow toned skin, but at least they will be blond. (God forbid a readhead, haven seen one in... I don't know how long.)

I'd honestly just want some diversity. More white skin tones so I can get caucasian townies generated as well, and I have some choice when I'm in CAS and I want to make a white sim.
Either added skin colours (I'd prefer that), or weight the amount of times certain skintones are used to even it out even just a little bit, so I get some diversity please.

I'd love to see some sims that look like me and people around me really, not that I really care about IRL in Sims. But since that is a driving force behind mostly anything about this itteration of Sims, I feel like me as a white person, is getting lost when it comes to "representation". Both in colour but also in culture. Culture does not just equal dark-skinned person, even though (some/most(?)) Americans might think so.

Where are the white skin tones? Please add more hair and eye colours as well. Also fix the naming pool while you're at it.
I play the game in English (not my native language), and I would assume to see some names to fit that setting, just like I would playing any game in any language. Just like it was in previous sims games.

If I played TS2 in English, the sims names would be in English (shocker).

  • This is a difficult subject to discuss in a community with many bad-faith actors, but...When the big major skintone update came out, the pale skintones that came with it were and remain terrible. The look sickly. They look purple and blue. They are by and large unnatural looking. I do think we traded one problem for another- a lack of dark skintones became a lack of (usable) lighter skintones, and because of the context of the conversation, nobody really wanted to have it. I think enough time has passed to admit the bulk of the lighter skintones in Sims 4 are not good.

There aren't that many pale-to-light-tan skintones that are actually usable IMO. At this point, we truly do simply need a second skintone overhaul to fully color-wheel and tone-adjust skintones.

That said, several parts of this post feel...weird. Like expecting all the townies to have "English" names. Some of those townies are Japanese, some are Indigenous American, some are Irish- they aren't going to all be English names. Now, are there bugs where too many Sims are Japanese and has that been an issue for years...? Yes.

  • I am someone who is extremely pale IRL as in I wear the lightest foundations (I am technically neutral but can wear cool tone if needed) and in some cases still have to add white mixer, and to highlight/contour I use white, I am basically between the lightest Sim skin tone and the occult white skin tone.

I too noticed that, though it is really cool they split skin tones by cool, warm and neutral, many of the medium-fair, fair and ultra fair skin tones can look odd and not cool occult odd.

It would be amazing even if they didn't want to go full colour wheel, and have slider for tone and undertone.

I noticed that ethnicity in Sims 4 seems to be influenced by pack, I started with occult packs and not much EPs but once I got Snowy Escape I almost every generated Sim was Asian but I did like it, I liked the idea of more diversity. But I noticed that besides premades, there isn't much Caucasians auto generated and the more packs I get it is almost impossible to get an auto generated Caucasian.

I almost wish that instead of fully randomized Sims there should be a premade bank of Sims of various ethnicities, and the randomized feature is only when a player clicks "randomize". These Sims that are in this pool should be even in diversity/ethnicity, and with each pack/patch/update more are added. They can be as simple as Maxis generated Sims used for previews, trailers, etc. or Sims that never made it to a household for packs. I mean I am sure there is a stockpile of Sims created that never made it to a pack that just sit in various devs' CAS Libraries.

Also, I think unless Maxis created/dressed, clothing should be limited to Styled Looks to minimize oddly dressed Sims, and eventually that we can create our own Styled Looks with tagging option to be used for auto-generated townies or not.

Name generation wise, I mean if they want to spoil us names could be given categories and just a drop down menu by origin, maybe even including ancient origin names too. I sometimes look up unique names by various sites with large indexes of names that include variations of names, meanings and origin. We'd wouldn't need that much information, but the fact they already exist for free online compiling would just be a matter of some adding a drop down menu, research and data entry, and honestly even if you leave the lists "light" modders and file tuners will/could add their own names to the selection in the internal files per origin category.

  • Yes, I would like some more fair skin tones as well, most of the ones we do have look unnatural.  I’d love to see mod fair colored ones.  I only use a couple of them.  I would like my fair skinned sims to have more natural tones…

  • Caucasian skin tones actually come in a range that can go from alabaster white to dark chocolate. It always baffles me when people refer to Caucasians as strictly white skinned. If you say Caucasian you refer to race as it is defined and it goes beyond just skin colour and implies other physical characteristics like hair type, eye colour and shape, etc.  If you think about it all races come in a range of skin colours from white to dark if we take in to consideration conditions like albinism.  That being said the issue I have with the lighter coloured skins in game is that they kind of glow. Because of this I rarely use them and most of my white sims are slightly tanned.

  • I agree and I don't think we should be afraid of criticizing the lack of white skin tones in the game. The neutral and the cool ones that they added look so pale as well.

Diversity is a difficult subject to discuss, but I feel that it goes both ways... when I looked at the premade families in Business & Hobbies I couldn't help but notice that there was not a single blonde female sim. Blonde hair is one of the most common hair colors here in scandinavia.

That and we didn't get any neighborhood with family houses... just two harbor neighborhoods. I mentioned this in their recent survey where they asked if I felt represented and I said no, and mentioned this.

This is a side effect of how governments, particularly the US but also Australia, organize people. In the US, "White/Caucasian" is a group you self-identify as on forms and stuff. They are paired together from childhood, even if the reality is "people from spain are caucasian". In the US, "Caucasian" literally means "White American" and there is no further thought/purpose to the term. It is not expressly the same as the outdated racial classification.

Likewise, a lot of institutionalized racism leads people to conclusions like "spanish people and everyone in the middle east are two sets of brown people" which...is...not accurate, and both are also considered caucasian regardless.

It's similar to when people in America use the term "African American" to mean black. It's just general day-to-day ignorance of what you're actually saying, and usually comes from a place of trying to be accurate, as we had a period where it was considered questionable to simply refer to someone as black and everyone over-compensated with "African American", and a bunch of people started using it to refer to literally anyone black- even if they weren't american! By mistake or ignorance, it was a thing. Nowadays we're back on simply using the term Black.

It's a very complicated thing, which is part of why the conversation on Sims 4 skintones is so hard to have- because not everyone has all this cultural context, and to some people, "But what about the lighter skins?" reads as "But what about the white people?". Unfortunately the OP reads a bit like the latter, but the former is a valid issue to address. The light skins in this game are a quality issue now, same as the dark skins were before.

Brown is not a race, it's a skin colour. I can understand people referring to Caucasians as white and Africans as black as long as they mean race. But when people start questioning your race based on your shade of skin colour is when things get weird for me. Brown Spanish people are still Caucasians or white whether they are in Europe or America. Africans with albinism are still black even though their skin is white. There are more things that define race than skin colour alone. I understand that you can't say black in America so they use the African American term for people of black race but it seems weird that it went so far that now only the whitest of white race are deemed as Caucasians.
