Request to Restore Rental Unit Cap Cheat

Hello Sims Team, I wanted to discuss a small request regarding the “bb.increaserentalunitcap” cheat. I completely understand the 6-unit limit was added for stability reasons. However, many of us purchased the For Rent Expansion Pack because we were eager to build larger apartment complexes and ambitious rental projects. This limitation feels somewhat frustrating. Would you consider re-enabling the cheat, even with a clear “use at your own risk” warning? This way, players comfortable using mods and experimenting could push the boundaries without requiring EA to officially support more than 6 units. We genuinely appreciate the ideas behind this pack but miss the freedom to experiment and create larger builds as originally possible. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I completely understand where you're coming from – the 6-unit limit does feel restrictive, especially for players who love building large apartment complexes.

Just wanted to gently mention that there's a reason EA disabled that cheat. From what I've seen in the community, forcing more than 6 units can seriously destabilize the game. The infamous "Error Code 800" (save file corruption) becomes much more likely when there are too many rental units in a world. The game's engine struggles to track and manage all the tenants, lot data, and events simultaneously.

If you do try to push past the limit (maybe using mods), please make sure to back up your saves regularly. A corrupted save from Error 800 is often unrecoverable, and losing a world you've spent hours building is really frustrating.

I hope EA finds a balance in the future too – maybe optimized support for larger lots. But for now, better safe than sorry!

  • I 100% agree that they should bring this cheat back! There should be a warning pop-up that says "use at your own risk".

I use TwistedMexi's 250 rentals per save mod with an average of 10 apartments per lot on a 10+ year old save and my game is perfectly fine. It's the people with a boat load of questionable mods and CC who are having corruption problems.

  • will the 6 unit cap ever be removed? I know it could be removed in the past but thats now gone. could the bug that caused the save corruption be fixed? i am writing this because the 6 unit cap kind of interferes with my gameplay. and i wanted to know if i can look forward to a fix or the cheat that allowed more than 6 units being brought back.

Because the save corruption issues are very hard issues to investigate and fix, I assume it will not be unlocked for the forseeable future. The Sims team have to consider that the save corruption issues that occur from Residental Rental units don't only affect one person and the issue can spread to other players via lots on the gallery using more than 6 units.

I wish they'd put it back, I never had a problem with the For Rent pack or increasing the units. I made a four level underground bunker with 15 tiny apartments and it worked perfectly! Please put the cheat back in!

All the time it causes save corruption for any Simmer and has the potential to spread though the gallery the cheat will remain disabled.

Well, maybe if EA focused more on fixes what causes those bugs and glitches instead of creating a marketplace no one wants to use, it wouldn't be a problem.

You do understand that multiple teams work on multiple different things right?

Bug fixes and optimisations are a completely different team from the martketplace and has no impact on what happens with the marketplace.

The issues with Residential Rentals is not a straight forward issue that can just be fixed in minutes. It is a deep rooted issue that stems from other issues as well and as such requires more intensive investigations.

The Marketplace is being used by many players and as such still has content being released weekly for it.

The Unit Rental Cap will remain disabled in the meantime until The Sims team can be sure that it is not going to cause major issues for any players. 😊
